Snapped on the fourth usage
For the first three holes I drilled in 1/8" aluminum this product worked pretty well, the hardest part always being the reverse; for some reason it's a cutting edge in both directions on the tapping segment, so it has a tendency to catch on the threads you just created rather than going back through smoothly like it should. If you aren't careful you could end up with an injured hand from the drill because it halts every time I used it. On the fourth hole I drilled, I was being careful and coming back out slowly when it suddenly caught and easily snapped the bit, leaving it lodged in my piece. I was able to extract it with some pliers and a lot of finagling, but really disappointed at how little value I got out of the bit. If you buy this, you might want to drill the hole, stop and remove the bit from your chuck, then twist it out by hand. Not sure if that would work better but it might be worth trying.

Using this to tap in 1/8” mild tube steel railing. Broke off in railing and took forever to get out. Never again.

I was excited to see this product as a time saver. It was marked as impact ready. The very first use the product shattered leaving a big chunk wedged in the sheet metal creating more work. I was using Ridgid cordless and had to spend time removing the broken bit. See image of product was still in barely used condition.

Having a drill bit and tap in the same product is a genius idea, and coupled with the quality of the SHOCKWAVE product line this is a well made, reasonably priced, and very useful addition to my DIY repair arsenal. I do not usually have to drill and tap metal, but recently have had the need to do so more than once and this has been extremely useful and a real time saver. The bit is extremely sharp and cuts thru aluminum like butter. The countersink feature is really nice as well. Did not come with instructions, but was easy to figure out; it did take me a bit to figure out it was 20 threads per inch (TPI), as I am relatively new to tap work. A nice addition to my DIY arsenal!

An amazing trick! I used to buy drill and tap bolts when bolting things onto the steel supports of my carport, but now that I have this, I can use regular ¼” course thread bolts instead. I use my impact driver to power this bit. It drills through the steel and then the die threads bite in and form a threaded hole. I extract it carefully using a slow speed so that the threads are not harmed as the bit is removed. ¼” course thread bolts and rods thread easily into the holes produced. (There are 20 threads per inch.) The driving end is a standard ¼” hexagonal drive allowing quick changes. The size (1/4”) is laser etched on the shanks for quick identification. A nice touch. The Milwaukee shockwave steel drill tap bit works well to both drill and immediately tap into metal in the same operation. I found it to be well designed and operate as expected. One thing to be aware of when using it is to be mindful of the depth of the thread capacity when working with thin material. Fully running the bit through the stock can cause the bit to run out of threads. This is not a huge problem, but can cause a little grief to get the bit out after the tap process by restarting it in reverse. Just be careful to slowly do the tap portion of the job to save some time getting the tool out of the stock.

Milwaukee shockwave 1/4 inch steel drill and tap bit is great for drilling hole and setting threads at the same time. It is very strong and stays sharp. We build utility trailers it works great for pre-drilling hole for screw on fenders and bed rails, my son can keep up with me running in the screws as fast as I drill them know, we was having to drill, then tap treads, then screw. Now done all at once. I had to buy a couple. Very nice.
