Can this be applied over paint? I have a flat finish i want to protect while minimizing the shine factor.
Asked by: Leo
Yes! I applied this over furniture chalk paint in a light gray color. I only waited 24 hours after my paint job before applying the polycrilic. Keep it stirred during application to avoid an overly shiny surface.

Would this work on something like plaster of paris (or clay) after it has been dried and painted?

Asked by: Bia
Hello. Generally, we do not like recommending top-coating paint. Paint is typically a very durable coating that will not benefit from the addition of a clear finish. However, if you wish to proceed with this type of application, the only products we offer that will be suitable over paint would be the Polycrylic or the Water-Based Helmsman Spar Urethane. Neither of these coatings will amber over time, which is typical with other polyurethane type products. To apply this product, however, you will need to allow the paint to fully cure (at least 30 days) first. This will prevent the solvents in our products from reacting with those still remaining in a still-curing paint coating, avoiding the color running, discoloring or hazing. Once the paint has cured, scuff sand the surface using a 220 grit sandpaper (removing the dust with a damp cloth) and then apply your clear finish per label directions. You should have pleasing results for your project. Regards, Minwax Customer Support

1 qt. Clear Matte Polycrylic Protective Finish for Interior Wood is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Scratches easily I used multiple coats of this on my kitchen table. The table gets heavy use but is in no way abused. It’s been about six months and the entire table is covered in shallow scratches. In the past I have used Varathane in crystal clear but was interested in this matte finish, and decided to try it instead. I will soon be sanding down the table and refinishing with Varathane, which now also comes in matte. This product might be fine for a piece of furniture that isn’t in constant use but I would not recommend it otherwise.

I have used this product in the 'satin' and "gloss" for years and years and the matte is just as awesome a product. I have used it on wood, over chalk painted pieces, on canvas over acrylic paint, over decoupage, you name it, even on glass and it always, always comes thru for me, dries very quickly which is great for an unpatient painter like me. It can be wet-sanded to achieve a glass smooth surface that everyone compliments me about on my furniture.

I used Americana Chalk paint directly onto the finished wood without sanding, priming or any prep beyond cleaning with windex. I finished it with two coats of Polycrylic. This whole project was a winner. Shellac is harder to work with than chalk paint because of the consistency, it splashes and runs. I'm happy but I do find the final product to be a little glossy. I expected it to be completely matte like the chalk. Keep that in mind with future products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Very Good Product I used DIY chalky paint on an old chest and used two coats of Minwax Polycrylic (matte finish) to seal it and I am very impressed with the protection and durability it gives. My only disappointment is that the matte finish has a little too much sheen- especially when you want to keep the chalky, matte finish of your painted piece. Unfortunately, I found out that if you want to get a truly dead-flat finish, you do have to give up some durability, so it's a trade-off. I thought about buying a product that is about $16.00 more per quart, because it's known for its high durability and then I thought: why? This product gives a nice, durable finish, it's readily available and much cheaper. Why would I use anything else? I've used other, more expensive top coats and this is about the same to apply and work with, so I see no need to change. This is a very good product.

I use it on cabinets to give it a good hard finish surface. Cleanup is a breeze. Applying it with a brush or roller is very easy to do and leaves a nice even layer. I have also used this product on the stairs that I redid. I used this on the risers and they came out looking great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great new product! While this is the first year for this product and therefore inconveniently does not come in gallon size, it is a winner! We used it for our new flat painted cabinets and the look is awesome. The low sheen of time weathered paint with all the protection of what would usually result in a high gloss. Went extremely well with the antique glazing treatment we used. The cabinets look like they've been there for years!!
