can you apply polyurethane with a rag?
Asked by: handyman24
It wipes on just fine, but the trade-off is time. Brushing is faster, as wiping requires more coats and sanding between coats. I'm arguably OCD when it comes to my projects, so it's a matter of how much time you're willing to invest for a craftsmanship finish. I let it dry overnight, lightly sand with 220-grit, brush-vacuum, and clean with tack cloth, next coat, repeat ... typically 4 coats. Use a good cloth (SKU 340-073 or 776-668) and cut it in half or quarters depending upon size of your project. Fold the cloth so exposed edges aren't applying the poly so you don't get fuzzballs in the poly. I've been doing this (wiping regular stains & poly) over 40 years with great results. Just not breaking speed records start to finish.

It has always been consistent of quality. It is easy to apply and dries in a short amount of time. I like to give my project a coat of the polyurathane, let it dry then fine sand it with a 220 grit sandpaper. Then apply a second coat. That is all you need to do with this polyurathane. If you wish to get a much thicker finish there are other products made to do that.

I have read some not so good reviews that I think may be a result of bad applications. Be sure to not shake the product to mix. Use a clean stir. Be sure to stir the contents from bottom. I often turn the can over several hours before use to get the content from the bottom and make an easy stir.

I have tried the water base product of this and although cleanup is with water I prefer this original much better. 2 coats with a light sanding in between and you have a rock hard surface. I have end tables I made 10 years ago that the finish is still strong as ever.

Have used Minwax polyurethane for years and have applied gallons of this product. This last purchase it appears that they have changed something in their formula. It applies thinner than before, similar to a water based product. After 4 coats of product I installed my project. Any small bump on the wood surface will leave a white bruise and damage the finish (no damage to the underlying wood) so I mean a very light bump is all it takes. I used this same product on 3000 LF of floor and door moldings in my house previous to this with no similar issues on the same wood, stain and finish (I am using this on white oak so wood strength or tenderness is not the issue). Very disappointed and am now looking for a new finish product. I have used Minwax products for over 20 years and have never had this happed before, if this was a bad batch from factory I am not sure but have 1 more quart from last purchase will put on something else to test results but will not buy again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good finish but product doesn't store well I have used Minwax products for over 40 years and have always been very happy. This was my first disappointment. I only needed a small amount but apparently they don't make pints anymore so I had to buy a quart. As expected it did the job. However, I just opened the can to use it again only a month later and there was a half inch of solid mass on the top. When I broke through that the rest of the polyurethane was like glue. It was completely unusable. So, if you need the whole quart, fine buy this product. But if you only need a small amount find something else because this doesn't store well at all. I've never had this happen to a can of polyurethane before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Produced a great finish I think the keys to using this product are take your time and don't skimp on the sanding. I used this to apply a protective finish to a project I was making out of pine. I didn't want a high gloss and this satin polyurethane did just the trick. Others have complained about bubbles coming up on their work but I believe a lot of that occurs because of shaking the bottle. I'm tempted to shake it to because it's smaller than the gallon size, but a few stirs with a paint stick is all you need. Sanding lightly helps you get a good final fish, especially if you look at your first coats and see bits of dust stuck on. Good product that will give you professional results.
