can you apply polyurethane with a rag?
Asked by: handyman24
I would use a natural bristle brush. A wiping varnish is a different product such as Good Stuff from Grizzly

Does this dry clear or with a yellowish tint? I need to cover a piece of wood with white paint so it truly needs to dry clear.

This product may be good for darker color furniture. My white cabinets look yellow and now I'll have to repaint them.

Have used Minwax polyurethane for years and have applied gallons of this product. This last purchase it appears that they have changed something in their formula. It applies thinner than before, similar to a water based product. After 4 coats of product I installed my project. Any small bump on the wood surface will leave a white bruise and damage the finish (no damage to the underlying wood) so I mean a very light bump is all it takes. I used this same product on 3000 LF of floor and door moldings in my house previous to this with no similar issues on the same wood, stain and finish (I am using this on white oak so wood strength or tenderness is not the issue). Very disappointed and am now looking for a new finish product. I have used Minwax products for over 20 years and have never had this happed before, if this was a bad batch from factory I am not sure but have 1 more quart from last purchase will put on something else to test results but will not buy again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good finish but product doesn't store well I have used Minwax products for over 40 years and have always been very happy. This was my first disappointment. I only needed a small amount but apparently they don't make pints anymore so I had to buy a quart. As expected it did the job. However, I just opened the can to use it again only a month later and there was a half inch of solid mass on the top. When I broke through that the rest of the polyurethane was like glue. It was completely unusable. So, if you need the whole quart, fine buy this product. But if you only need a small amount find something else because this doesn't store well at all. I've never had this happen to a can of polyurethane before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Produced a great finish I think the keys to using this product are take your time and don't skimp on the sanding. I used this to apply a protective finish to a project I was making out of pine. I didn't want a high gloss and this satin polyurethane did just the trick. Others have complained about bubbles coming up on their work but I believe a lot of that occurs because of shaking the bottle. I'm tempted to shake it to because it's smaller than the gallon size, but a few stirs with a paint stick is all you need. Sanding lightly helps you get a good final fish, especially if you look at your first coats and see bits of dust stuck on. Good product that will give you professional results.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nothing but trouble My contractor used this product to finish my retro stair treads - oak. He hoped that the fast drying formula would allow us to complete the project sooner, but it has been nothing but trouble. We applied according to directions, in recommended temp and humidity. It has taken over a week for the first coat to dry. Every time he tries to sand, the finish gums up, not allowing him to progress. My contractor is first a painting contractor, with many years of experience working with products such as this. This is his (and mine) first - and last- time working with this fast drying version of MinWax poly!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall good quality. I thought this was a bit more glossy than anticipated as well, but I'm okay with it. I used it on a dining room table I bought and it works really well. Following the directions and using as light of a coat as possible for the first coat makes for a great outcome. The second coat I used seemed to take more than the first, but overall, I was impressed with the outcome. My past experiences involved a bunch of runs and extensive sanding between coats. Not with this. I really didn't even see the need to sand after the first coat, but I did anyway since the directions said to.
