Questions & Answers

Can I use it on painted (not stained) wood?

Can I use it on painted (not stained) wood?
Asked by: Abe
Hello. Yes, we agree. Polycrylic can be used over paint. However, latex paint needs to be cured for 30m days, oil-based paint, 7 days. If the paint has any sheen or is chalking, it will need to be dull (220 is an ideal grit), make sure the paint is dry and is clean, and is not flaking or peeling. Regards, Minwax Customer Service

Can I use this over oil base stain on my dining table top?

Asked by: AGA
I just used MINWAX brand STAIN on my kitchen island top, an oil based stain. It says on the can that MINWAX product Polycrilic can be applied over it. so YES for sure if you use Minwax oil based stain. I would wait 24 hours to allow stain to dry before using the Polycrylic.

I have used this on several projects with great results. I like satin because it is not flat and not too glossy, it is perfect for furniture and floors. I went with water-based because once done with oil-based staining, I was tired of fumes and stink. I do 2-3 coats on everything, finely sanding with a 220+ grit sandpaper in between. It helps smooth everything out. Also, use a good nylon brush. DO NOT allow the sun to hit this while it is drying, it will bubble and whiten but can be sanded out. The picture is of my dining room table with Minwax dark walnut and this polyurethane.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Know what you are using. This is an excellent water based protectant. But if you used oil based in the past you need to understand the differences: 1). Water based works best on water based stain. You can have clouding if covering an oil based product 2) it MUST be applied in a thin coat, multiple times. Drops with oil based will dry clear, this will dry milky. Be vigilant in cleaning up drips and spread until it looks clear 3) It gives wood a warm glow. Especially if it's not stained first. I like the vintage look, but if you don't, you may want to use the traditional stuff 4) water dries faster than oil. You have to know what you are doing on large surfaces to keep the edges wet and blended. On the other hand you can handle and revisit quickly. Water based is great. Because it is far less toxic (in substance and outgassing) and it can be cleaned up with a wet rag. Brushes rinse clean quickly, but it doesn't work like oil based Hope this helps

The area was wood plywood with water based primer (2 coats) and two coats of spray paint which was dry as well. If the Miniwax have a SPECIFIC answer of why this happens it would be useful. I would be interest to find the actual CHEMICAL reason for the yellowing. Thanks.

I tried so hard to get the stuff to work, I spent the last several weeks re-sanding and re-applying this to try to get the finish right. I tried following the instructions, I tried a good brush a cheap brush a foam brush and a rectangular wall paint applicator, none of it worked. Dries blotchy and you get a lot of bubbles. It's a pain in the butt, maybe I got a bad batch but I won't try it again.

That two hour recoat time is very appealing, but it comes at a price. There is no leveling...NONE...with this product. They mean it when they say dry to touch in half hour. I did a counter and it was settling as fast as I was putting it on. Any and all brush strokes were captured no matter the stroke- thick, thin, foam or synthetic. I tested it.. It was perfect weather conditIons and I followed the instructions. I have used poly many times over my life with fantastic results. This was not one of them. Do not attempt big areas with this product. They final result is worth far more than any quick dry time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waist of money I have been using similar products from different brands and anything beads this one. First time I've used Minwax poly acrylic and I regret dearly. A lot of foam, running, air bubbles etc(and no I did not shake it before use nor was it Frozen). Do yourself a favor go to paint store pick up a gallon of quality product. It'll save you a lot of grief. You welcome.

I used this product to seal 5 mm plywood I installed on my garage walls as back bumpers for cabinets . The product applies easily and clean up is effortless. Be sure to follow the instructions for the number of coats and the appropriate application technique to minimize bubbles.
