I'm in the process of building a tree house loft bed for my granddaughter. Will this stain work on very rough saw mill rustic pine board that I'm using for siding, and roofing?
Asked by: LWD
For both exterior & interior, semi-transparent deck/siding stains work too. As Minwax replied, be sure to use Helmsman over outdoor applications ... and for interior high-moisture uses like bathrooms. Just make sure all the products you use are oil-based.

How long does it take for the fumes to subside? I used this stain to finish a small dresser and the fumes are unbearable

Asked by: Tina
All finishes, all brands, are stinky ... oil-based products more than their water-based counterparts. Always work in a well-ventilated area where fumes will *not* be in the vicinity of "fired" appliances (furnace, water heater, dryer, stove, etc.). And be sure to employ other safety precautions such as nitrile gloves, goggles as needed, disposal of brushes & rags, etc.

polyurethane and/or polycrylic?

I'm about to refinish my hardwood floors, after staing do I need both polyurethane and polycrylic or do I choosr one or the other?
Asked by: Ryder
Hello. We would recommend the polyurethane, Polycrylic is not for floors as stated on the label. You can apply 2-3 coats of the polyurethane as that will give protection. Regards, Minwax Customer Support

Can you post more photos of the finished look of the stain?

Can you post more photos of the finished look of the stain?
Asked by: Karly
I'm using this on my current project (photo attached) ... Classic Gray on raw pine, unsanded, shiplap. I wiped it on, rather than brushing, to accentuate the grain & create a more weathered effect. I'll then wipe on multiple coats of satin poly, lightly sanding between coats, to intentionally yield a natural-textured finish. Hopefully the camera & your device somewhat capture the true color.

Using this on my current project & it came out nice on raw pine shiplap and some mouldings. Wiped it on instead of brushing to create a more weathered appearance. Regarding sediment in the bottom of the can, that's the nature of oil-based stains. They all need to be thoroughly stirred (not shaken) both initially and every few minutes during application. Being a stain, it will inherently look different on natural variations in a wood's grain, density/porosity & colors than paint. The pigments will also separate much faster than paint, hence the need for more frequent stirring. Don't shake it vigorously or you'll have a gazillion bubbles to contend with. Same holds for poly finishes.

This stain works just like your other Minwax oil-based stains...and that's a great thing! I'm pretty sure the other reviews are from people that are not familiar with staining wood. You need to sand your wood well, and you need to stir the can WELL before use, and give it a stir every once in a while during use as well. I also try to use pre-stain treatment as well; not necessary but it helps even out the stain color, and with certain types of wood that bleed tannin it's super important to pre-stain, regardless of color. You don't want any "cloudiness" or uneven coloring. So anyway, I am a pro at staining wood now after 20 years or so (finally, hah), and let me tell you, a little goes a long way! I like to use this to reduce red/orange tones in the wood, and it works splendidly! Take a look at my red oak floors in my house I recently purchased, they came out beautifully! Nice & modern, not orange or red at all!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Gray Not sure if I did something wrong as I've used MiniWax before but the color doesn't come out correctly. It ended up staining unevenly. I followed the instructions to a T as well. The can seals well that's a positive but it doesn't matter if the product isn't working correctly. I wouldn't recommend this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Color! Purchased this stain by Minwax after reading reviews for Valspar's gray stain. Everyone was saying Valspar stain looked blue. I have a unfinished farm table I wanted stained gray for my patio. This Classic Gray is not blue! It is a true medium gray. It is darker than the sample in store or photo on front of can. I also bought some Ebony stain thinking I would have to darken the gray, but not necessary. It dries a dark, weathered, true gray color. If you are wanting to mimic weathered wood, this is the one to get. It dried fairly quickly even though it was a humid day when applied. Highly recommend this stain.
