I would think that you would need potting soil for a bucket, not Garden soil for in ground use.

Hi Dvewar, Yes, I would certainly use it if planting a new blue spruce. I'd also mix in some used mulch and lightly sprinkle in some Miracle Gro fertilizer pellets or use one of their evergreen feeding spikes as well. Good luck!

Yes, if you start off with the appropriate soil and it has some fertilizer in it already, the plant gets a good start at the roots and will do better. Make sure to water for the first couple of weeks until the roots take hold,

Hi Bill, Here and over on the Miracle Gro website, there are similar postings about the quality. I am finding a much higher mulch content than ever before and still occasionally find pieces of construction debris. Miracle Gro is using an ever increasing amount of recycled materials and like you, I am finding the quality of the product less satisfactory. With that said, you shouldn't be seeing a bag full of sawdust. I'd look at returning that and exchanging it.

Will this help a planted area with soggy soil or will it drown the plants?

You will want to improve drainage if the area is low or tends to flood to prevent soil from remaining saturated.

Literally full of trash
Built a garden for my wife, and filled it with this garden soil. Unfortunately i didn’t notice until after i dumped all the bags that it is honestly filled with trash. Now i have to sift through all the dirt! Its full of every type of plastic you can imagine, huge chunks of rubber and even found broken glass! All in a brand new unopened bag! Completely unacceptable.

Very disappointed with this so-called garden soil
We got the same soil last year and they were of great quality. However, we got the same brand and same kind of garden soil this year and it looks to be mulch instead of soil. Not sure if I trust this brand again. Nothing is growing from this mulchy "soil".

Depends what you need it for
This soil contains a lot of mulch. It’s not ideal for my indoor garden, but I didn’t have many options available for curbside pickup. I tried a different miracle grow product for vegetables and ended up with a ton of fungus gnats. So far no gnats with this one.

Rubber in soil
This is second time I give miracle fro a try and I am pretty disappointed. Just as I was thinking it was a good quality soil, I find a large chunk of rubber in it.

Cutworms/caterpillar
I had a bag of soil from three years ago where I have used to plant a really small indoor herbs, and it never gave me problems. None of my plants were ever attacked etc, and so I got another bag less than two weeks ago, and now my indoor herbs are attacked with cutworms. I already found five of them eating my plants at night. Unfortunately I have already trimmed back some of my herbs, but here’s a picture of the caterpillar.

Larvas in the soil.
This is the first year that I'm growing veggies, and I made two rise beds, my first one I bought another brand and had no issues when I made the second one, with MiracleGro I noticed first that the soil is made of mulch less soil than the other brand, and I noticed some small white balls in the soil that I thought was kind of fertilizer, but THEY WEREN'T, you can pop these larvae with your fingers, after a month I started seeing my plants being eaten, all leaves were bitten almost all plants leaving some almost to nothing, so I started some research, I found maladera castanea, the asiatic garden beatle, around the plants, then I started checking the soil and all soil is infested with larvas and bugs eaten the roots of my plants. So sad to see this. Please as soon as you see this return the soil.

I have used bags of this soil both in ground for veggies and also in my big grow box as well as containers for cantaloupes and cucumbers. It is a good loamy soil and I always get healthy plants. I do amend it by adding some compost, whether my own or the cow compost, fertilizer and maybe fish emulsion. So I don't think one can use it to grow plants without some amending. I like the consistency, few sticks and mulch bits mixed in you find in other soils, especially the top soils. I use it mostly these days for container gardening of veggies and fruits. I would recommend this soil.
