Asked by: Swaste
After reading CF's comment above, I dumped by recently purchased bag on a tarp before putting in my planter and sorted through it and also found several bits of plastic waste in mine. I can't believe this product is OMRI listed for organic use...

I bought this by mistake instead of garden soil, would this work well as garden soil? I'd like to avoid dragging the heavy bags back to the store for exchange.
Asked by: PCTech
Works better than the garden soil. With the garden soil you will need to mix in manure to grow vegetables.

The plants I started inside went into this garbage 1 month ago and have not grown 1" since. It actually looks like my tomato plants are dying and my peppers have not grown at all. My strawberries literally have not moved. Today I finally went out and purchased all sorts of amendments and fertilizers to try and save my raised beds as I've invested hundreds of dollars at Home Depot into my vegetable garden already (raised bed, soil, seeds, fertilizers, etc.) Home depot, I want my money back for this topsoil you're selling as organic raised bed soil.

I had used one bag of this product to add to my raised beds last year, and while it was a bad year for the plants, I did not think to blame the soil... until now... I was shocked to find a plastic water bottle and other stray plastic fragments in the NEW bags I purchased just recently! I should have believed the bad reviews. An entire plastic bottle; I am so disheartened by the Miracle Grow company. Shame on you.

This is my first year doing a raised garden bed, and this soil exceeded my expectations. I used roughly 20 bags for two 5x6 raised soiled beds and mixed it with Dr Earth Organic Fertilizer. It has been roughly six weeks since planting my garden. The only thing that had me concerned was a fungus grew from it, but it pretty much rained for a week straight and I was wondering if it was from the extensive rain, not the soil. Also, the bottom of my beds are lined with weed barrier to keep the weeds out. I will let the images of my cucumber, zucchini, and squash bed do it justice.

First note that the only good reviews are labeled "Customer review from scotts.com". After purchasing 6 bags, I now believe the poor ratings. Water pools up on the top of this "soil". It was dusty and full of white mold. I mixed it with some good compost, hopefully that will help. Scotts should pay us for hauling this stuff away.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just use compost Here is a letter that I just wrote to Miracle-Gro " To whom this may concern, Two weeks ago I purchased 6 bags of Nature’s Care organic garden for some no-till vegetable beds. I dumped out all 6 bags and spread 9in to a foot in depth. Two days later my zucchini and cucumber plants had perished. Upon looking at the “soil” I noticed it appeared to be just composted wood chips and peat moss. I did have some trouble wetting the soil but I’m assuming that is due to the large amount of dry peat moss in the mix. I stuck my hand down in the soil and it was very hot, almost as if the mix was still composting. Checking this afternoon I did also notice a very large number of weeds etc in the mix. Please see attached photo "

These bags must have been stored outdoors, as they were waterlogged. All bagged brands of soil have small vent holes, and if stored outdoors, and not covered, will be waterlogged if it rains. That being said, the bags I bought seemed to contain a lot of black peat, which gets mucky when wet, and not very much other organic matter was visible, to keep the mix loose when wet. I would mix with native soil, or other amendments to loosen it up better.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth the money, better add compost. We used this soil in 2 out of our 4 raised beds last season. The other 2 beds we just used cheap topsoil and mushroom compost. The beds with the miracle gro didn't do well at all. It is very loamy and drains very well but there are hardly any nutriens and hardly any compost in it at all. It would be okay if you added mushroom compost and other amendments but for what it cost we spent 1/4 the price on the other 2 beds and they did so much better. It states on the bag, "No mixing necessary" but that is not true at all. There was a huge difference between this and our other soil. I recommend just mixing compost and topsoil and add some peat moss, much cheaper and works way better.

I bought 2 bags of this soil and the mix seems like 50% sand mixed with 50% coco coir wood chips roots.... I'm very very very disappointed with this product. the soil was full of sand and wood pieces. and didn't feel at all like a quality soil. You can see the sand particles shining with the light. I'm still thinking if I should plant any crops in it as I'm afraid they will die. I don't recommend this product to anybody.
