Will this drain well enough to plant succulents in it?

Asked by: BJ
My small succulent was getting too big for its tiny container, and I had to repot it in a bigger planter. I used this potting mix to make the transfer. It's been about two weeks now, and my plant seems to be doing fine.

Going to be purchasing sand, ideally this one meets the eyes but just in case, I'd like to know if this soil is: fertilizer free, chemical free and vermiculite free? I know label says organic, just making sure what the rest of the bag may say. thank you.

I found fungus gnat in the soil when opening the bag, Can I get a full refund?

We are sorry to hear of your experience with Miracle-Gro Nature's Care Organic Potting Mix. The soil you purchased is a natural product. While we do not sterilize the soil it is composted to kill any harmful insects and microbes. Unfortunately, soils may become infested with insects while in storage or while they are waiting for sale. Some steps to follow would be to let the soil dry out more between each watering. Dry soil helps kill the larvae. Anything left after an hour should be poured out. Apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Sand should be left on the container for several weeks, until the problem is solved. To catch the adults you can putting a small bowl of cider vinegar with a drop of dish washing liquid near the houseplants or use yellow sticky traps. Insects will not disappear overnight. It may take several weeks but you should begin to see a reduction in insect numbers. All houseplants in the home should be treated. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please contact us to see what can be done. We can be reached at 877-220-3089 and one of our representatives will be happy to assist you.

Nature's Care 8 Qt. Organic Potting Mix is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Crawling with fungus gnats I expected this to be heat-treated to kill off any residual bugs etc. It was not. I couldn't figure out where they were coming from until I took a MUCH closer look at my soil when I went to plant some seeds. The soil was stored well away from where I keep my plants. I've spent nearly $20 on things to kill the gnats + lost so many seedlings and plants because they spread from my newly planted pots to my other indoor plants. In addition, unless you HEAVILY augment the soil with perlite, it's so incredibly moisture-retaining that indoor plants get mold on the soil after just a normal watering. HORRIBLE product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great until the Bugs Came Out I recently bought a pretty crossandra plant and chose this soil for the container. Brought everything home and potted the plant. I have no other plants and currently it is outside on my 3rd story balcony. Good thing it's outside because almost 2 weeks later, my plant is covered in fungus gnats! After reading other testimonials & reviews it appears this has apparently happened to others as well. I attribute to the gnats coming from the soil. I realize it is an organic product but we have never had this problem with Miracle Gro before. I am going to be repotting my plant as soon as I can afford to with another brand of soil. Very disappointed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fungus Gnats and Scale Infestation I had previously purchased Nature's Care Organic Potting Soil, and used it with no problems. I just purchased several bags for spring re-potting, and now have a Fungus Gnat and Scale infestation. I'm positive the Fungus Gnats are from the soil, as I still have the original packaging. I have dozens of house plants and have lost several of them, as well as my entire herb garden to these pests. I'm pretty bummed. I've attached photos of the wilted plants and scale infestation.

At first I was scared to purchase this product after I read about the gnats that were found in the soil, but I was running out of options since I had to re-pot my plant. It was either this or Miracle Gro, and this seemed to be the better option having less negative reviews. Well, I reluctantly purchased it, and I have to say that it has been a couple of weeks now, and my plant is growing beautifully and I haven't seen gnat one! I am so glad I got this soil. Since I have a lot left, I am going to buy that rubber plant I have had my eye on for awhile and if I have any soil left after that, I will buy another plant! My plant came with directions that said "let the plant dry out thoroughly" between waterings and I follow those directions to a tee and think that's why there has been no gnats. So my advice is to read the directions that came with your plant and I think you will be good to go! I think the problem may come from not letting the plant(s) dry out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from nutrient poor soil In looking at this soil, I found a rock, sticks, pieces of bark and various other miscellaneous pieces. How does this compare to a potting soil I used that had the comparable nutrients? It doesn't grow as fast or as healthy a product as I've noticed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality potting mix This is by far the best potting soil I have used, the only con is that it doesn`t have perlite mixed in it, which is no big deal. I bought a bag of perlite and added some. Excellent product, DON`T CHANGE IT! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Full of fungus gnat larvae and/or eggs! I have 4 raised vegetable garden beds in my yard and 15-20 potted basil plant that I had kept in my house under lights to avoid getting basil powder mildew. This review is for the potting mix, but my story will also cover your Raised Bed and Garden Soils as well as 'Really good Compost'. I had over 20 basil plants, started from seed that needed to be repotted in the Spring. I chose your Organic Potting mix for the job. I also potted a special pot/plant for my mom for mothers day with the same soil. Within days there were fungus gnats swarming all over the plants. My mom's plant was so bad she sadly returned the pot to me because she was afraid her apartment would get infested. I wanted to be sure it was the dirt I had used, so I bought 2 more bags of Miracle Gro organic potting mix, sterilized all the basil pots and repotted each plant using ONLY Miracle Gro potting mix. The plants were kept indoors under lights by themselves. Days later the plants were swarming with gnats and eventually a few plants actually died because the larvae had eaten the plant’s roots – I could see the larvae in the pot – there were SO MANY!! I immediately moved them outside and was swarmed by the gnats in the process. Since I only used your potting mix I have to attribute the infestation to your product. This is bad enough, however, worse yet I have 4 raised garden beds in my yard. My raised beds were started last year with Bumper Crop, vermiculite, peat moss, and several types of organic good quality compost, no Miracle Gro products of any kind. I needed to supplement my raised beds this year with dirt and compost so I chose Miracle Gro organic compost garden soil, and raised bed soil. The raised beds this year have been infested with gnats, squash bugs and cucumber beetles – NONE OF WHICH I have ever had before adding the Miracle Gro soil to the beds. Because of this I have spent countless hours and dollars – mostly trying to salvage my raised beds. The cucumber beetles killed my cucmber plants and have wreaked havoc on my squash and zucchini plants. I have tried Beneficial Nematodes, Captain Jacks spray, hand picking the pests and their offspring, etc. I am really concerned about next year and what the larvae they have left in my beds will do to next years plantings. I can not afford to start all over again – hundreds of dollars for the vermiculite, peat moss and organic compost for four 4x4x18″ beds. I hadn't even considered Miracle Gro as the source for the insect problems in my raised beds until I pretty much proved that the potting soil caused the gnat infestation in my basil plants. I did some research online and found many others with similar stories. Considering that I had never seen these insects in my garden in 20 years of regular and raised bed gardening AND that my potting mix experiment pretty much proved to me that Miracle Gro was responsible for the fungus gnats, it seems entirely possible, if not likely, that Miracle Gro had something to do with the insects in my raised beds. Miracle Gro is – OR WAS – a trusted name – I have used it for years, however, my husband brought a bag of Miracle Gro potting soil home last weekend for his perrenials - he is returning it - no more Miracle Gro is being used in my yard!!
