Questions & Answers

Is there any Potting soil for vegetable covered the whole season

Dear Sir, As a gardener, I am looking for a pot soil having all nutrient required for most vegetable crops from seedling to Adult Stages in particular for Solanaceae & Cucurbitaceae Crops without any further amendment. My Idea is to grow the vegetable in bag Culture Technique with only water drip irrigation rather than the continuous pumping the nutrients through irrigation system used . Thank You

You are asking in the wrong area and technically asking the wrong question. What you want is a type of tea (a mixture of soils and other permaculture), you won't find that here. It's doable but only with some research and experimentation. There are no shortcuts and no one size fits all solution.

How many days before harvest can one spray Tomato Plant Food?
Asked by: damajoro
This is not a spray -- it is water soluble meaning you mix it with water or apply to plant and water in.

so i see some of the other plant foods for tomatos and vegetables have extra Calcium i know most vegetables need lots of Calcium. does this have the needed calcium already included or do i need to get extra? im not very good with plants (they usually die on me ) so i want to make sure i get what they need this time. i have jalapenos, habenaro, bell peppers, celery (started from the heart of an existing plant), garlic(4 cloves that sprouted of it as we love garlic), and a green onion. i dont want to get extra if this has enough for my plants but if it dosent i do want to get extra but i didnt see anything that said it had extra calcium like on other plant foods.
Asked by: annixandra
Tomatoes often need extra calcium, but I do not see any listing for calcium on the label. Generally calcium does not come in a "water soluble" form. If the tomato develops black rot on the base, you need to add lime (calcium).

Will this be as effective as using citruis-specific feed on citrus trees?

Will this be as effective as using the citruis-specific feed on citrus trees?
Asked by: Lisa
No this is not the ideal mix for citrus. Citrus may need something more like a 13-7-13. Your actual dosing will depend on the specific type of citrus plant, it's age and stages of growth. This is something you will want to do some research on, as asking here is not going to get you the answers you want, only generic advice at best. If growing citrus you may need something to adjust iron content, calcium and acidity levels. A permaculture approach would be more sustainable.

Miracle-Gro Water Soluble 1.5 lb. Tomato Plant Food is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 133.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from My tomatoes got Blossom-End-Rot, Miracle-Gro for Tomatoes does not have the necessary CALCIUM in it My tomatoes did have Blossom End Rot. It is a disease that tomatoes get when they don't receive enough CALCIUM. Miracle-Gro for Tomatoes does not have calcium in it. I wish they would add calcium to its formula. I do like to use this type of water-soluble fertilizer on my plants. This product did make my tomato plants get real nice and green and very large. As a matter of fact, my tomatoes plants got so huge with this product that they were out of control and took over my garden. The heavy duty tomato cages I had around them bent and I had to use stakes to hold the cages up. I also got a good yield of tomatoes but they were no good because of the Blossom End Rot. Bottom-line, if you use this fertilizer be sure to add some sort of calcium to your garden soil. To add calcium, some people use Bone Meal, others use Egg Shells that they crush up, and yet others just throw an antacid tablet like Tums into the hole when planting (antacid tablets have calcium).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just What the Doctor Ordered I use this product for both my peppers and tomatoes once they started showing signs of producing vegetables. When I first plant my plants, I use the regular Miracle-Gro since its contents are 24-8-16. This high content of nitrogen gives my plants a good kick-start and causes them to grow rapidly and very green. Once they start producing a vegetable (after the first flower disappears), I switch over to this product which is rated 18-18-21. Now the higher content is potassium which helps with disease resistance and drought resistance as well as having a much higher content of Phospherous which is great for the flower and fruit production.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes plants grow and produce I planted these tomato plants the last week of March. They were only 3 to 5 inches tall. I began fertilizing them after a few weeks in the pots you see them in now. They started to really grow after the fertilizing started to the point that you could see growth each day. I also used this fertilizer on my flowers in my front yard. They also began to show growth and began to bloom within a week and a half. My tomato plants are now showing fruit over the last three days. There are lots of blossoms on the plants and if they continue to grow at this pace, I should be eating tomatoes in a few more weeks. This is my first time growing tomatoes in a pot, but these are strong plants and the one that is the shortest is the one producing fruit already. Miracle-Gro is the right stuff for your garden. All you need to do is prepare the soil for planting and begin feeding a short time after that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I live in Nigeria where it can get extremely hot and humid hence the grass burns. I apply miracle grow to my plants and lawn twice a month and everybody believes they are artificial as all remains green and luscious. I recommend miracle grow for all plants and lawns. I just bought miracle grow for tomatoes recently and my new vegetable garden is blossoming. Miracle grow is Fantastic and it works like magic. I also tried other products from competitors as i am now into gardening but i was so disappointed as they all burnt my grass.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Won't ever go without it! I started gardening in 2012 and used this product. I had great results with huge plants and an abundance of large healthy tomatoes and cucumbers. In 2013 I used it with the same results. Last year I didn't use it and was extremely low on funds due to my husband losing his job due to business closing. So I went cheaper (even though miracle gro isn't expensive) and tried a no name $2.00 stuff. BAD DECISION. What money I didn't spend on buying miracle gro I lost 10 fold on a flopped garden. Tomato plants, didn't grow much or fast like they had using miracle gro and I ended up with very little usable crop due to tomato plant disease. I will NEVER go without using miracle gro tomato plant food in my vegetable garden ever again. I recommend to everyone that gardens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Skeptical at first, but impressed I have always been skeptical that specially formulated fertilizer product could perform any better than a traditional 10-10-10 product. However, I have used the Miracle-Gro vegetable fertilizer the past two years and I can see a noticeable difference, especially this year with the drought we experienced in the Midwest. The product is easy to use, comes with its own measuring device. I just use my watering can to apply the dissolved fertilizerr.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NO CALCIUM = Blossom End Rot Miracle Grow is great in that reasonably priced and a great overall fertilizer and ease of use. On tomatoes, they are thirsty plants and use a LOT of everything. The problem with Miracle-Gro® Water Soluble Tomato Plant Food is that is contains NO CALCIUM! Without calcium, the tomatoes plants develop Blossom End Rot (which every one of my plants did). In the end, I lost my entire garden of six huge tomato plants. It was a waste of time and effort and all because Miracle Grow promotes this specifically for tomato plants but failed to add everything the plants needs. VERY upset and will not use due to the above again and until they change the formulation and include calcium.
