I’ll be painting a pine door that I stripped the old paint off, do I need to prime the wood before I paint?

Asked by: Jet
Since you're going back down to bare wood, Jet, we do suggest that you consider use of a primer such as Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer before application of the Modern Masters Front Door Paint! https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-1-Gal-White-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-2001/100398391 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

My exterior door has thick old paint on it, do I have to sand it down and use primer before applying this?
Asked by: BrockC
Only if the surface is rough and peeling up. If u decide to pull the old paint up, wear a mask if sanding. Another method that’s easier and faster us to use a paint stripper on it like “Citrustrip”. Ya brush it on, let it sit, and then use a paint scraper and you’ll get layers off at once. Put plenty of plastic under to catch the mess.

We are having a new metal front door installed from our builder and it needs to be painted, so first I am guessing I do not need to prime it since it is brand new. And second, can you apply this with a roller or do you need to use a brush?
Asked by: Rush611
A brush is best to get in the detailed areas, or if u are using a roller get one for very smooth surfaces. I use both for a front door—I paint the details and crevices with the brush first, then the flat surfaces with the roller.
