Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Modern Masters Metal Effects Kit is suitable for use on previously painted surfaces. You will want to ensure that you are using the primer in the kit and that the surface is free of any loose paint and in good, sound condition. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

    Answer This Question

A:  I don't see why not. You may want to use some fine sand paper to scuff it up first, and you may want to do it in sections, because the paint needs to be wet when you spray it. There are some videos on youtube. Take your time, plan it out. You can do it.

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Susan! Our Modern Masters Metal Effects Blue Patina Oxidizing Finish Kit may be applied to metal surfaces using the included primer and top coat. To ensure an even finish, we recommend reading and following the kit and label instructions. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi Jim, thank you for reaching out! Yes, when coating larger surfaces, the second coat of Oxidizing Metallic Paint will need to be done in sections, as the Patina Aging Solution should be applied within 5 minutes of the second coat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

        by|Jun 19, 2019

A:  Yes. You need to spray the paint while it is wet, so it's best to work in sections if you have to. There are some tutorials on youtube.

            Answer This Question

A:  You can, but I think you may have to seal the cement first, and then afterwards seal the finish with an outdoor heavy duty sealer.

Results Require Technique - a learning curve
I had an old, bronze birdbath with a verdigris finish. It sat upon a cast, pedestal made of either concrete or plaster over a fiberglass base made to look like carved stone. I filled broken section of the base and sanded both pieces before joining them into a single unit and added a drip irrigation line so that the bird bath could refill every time my irrigation system ran. I decided to use this blue patina oxidizing finish kit on it to make the unit look like a one piece, aged metal sculpture. As other have said, it was easy to do. However, there were a couple of shortcomings that provided lessons for me. This isn't a cheap product so, near perfect results would be required for value. Otherwise, I could have just used a green base with wiped on black glaze for the finish at a fraction of the price of this kit. The chip brushes provided are quite cheap and left some hairs in the final copper paint coat that I did not see until too late. Not a deal breaker on a rustic, outdoor piece but..... The paint shows brushstrokes badly. Again, not a serious issue on my particular project but, I'd be concerned if I were to use this on a flat, smooth surface. I did NOT achieve the overall, verdigris finish I desired. It's rather blotchy and too much bright copper showing through in some areas. I am guessing that, the copper base was not wet enough in all places when I applied the oxidizer, even though I worked very quickly. I am hoping that a year or so of outdoor exposure will oxidize the piece further and give me the overall look I was going for as is on the cover of the package. One reviewer here indicates it will while another says it won't and needs to be redone. We shall see.

Found the coverage area to be less than anticipated, and am glad I ordered three kits for my project. I also completed the Full process on on part of my project, and since the Blue step three spray popped out as Bright Light Blue as it did, possibly because I over applied the spray, (not certain) we elected to paint over the blue, after it dried, and left the project in Bronze, which for our project looked Much Better. The picture on the box and the photos of other small projects simply Did Not look like my project where applied.

Make your project a timeless piece
Upon recieving this Blue Patina Metal Effects Paint kit. Spray applicator and paint brushes are included too. I realized that my original project I could not complete as the kit probably would not have been enough material to complete even one cast iron antique chair then alone 4 total. But there are so many possibilities and projects that I easily found another item to use this Oxidizing Finish kit on. By following the instructions and steps and a few hours of letting your project cure/dry. I ended up with a beautiful result. I have never attempted this type of painting before and was not sure how it was going to work out but by following the simple steps ended up with a professional looking project anyone would be proud to display. I am happy enough with the results that I will buy additional Finishing kits and do those 4 outdoor cast iron chairs too. Great product by Modern Masters. Thanks so much for making products that look so great and are easy to use. Two thumbs up..

            Fun process
“Modern Masters Blue Patina Metal Effects Paint Oxidizing Finish Kit creates a beautiful oxidized metal finish on any paintable surface”. This is what the description says and watching the video I believe it can be done. However, as you will see by my photos, it takes practice. They were my first tries all done at the same time. I used basic dollar store items to test. I had a bare clay pot, a painted metal can and a plastic bucket (wanted to see if it would work on the plastic even though not listed). Read all the instructions first – they are short! I sanded the painted metal can and the plastic bucket to dull the finish. If not careful, the primer will sheet on the plastic and run on everything if applied too heavy. Absolutely stir the primer paint – there was about ½ inch of almost solid material on the bottom. It did stir in with some effort. It takes 2 coats but you can re-coat in ½ hour. I let the second coat dry overnight (manual says 12 hours) I added the metallic paint and let it dry a ½ hour (if it’s cold you will need more time – I used a hair dryer after 45 minutes and it was not dry – my basement is about 65 degrees today) Once it was dry I added the last coat – this is where practice is needed. First, I didn’t look at the sprayer top very closely on the Aging Solution and sprayed the first spray in a stream – NOT pretty. When I adjusted the top to spray, it did much better. It was hard to get all sides because the items were wet and hard to pick up w/o messing up the second coat. I had several bad places where there was way too much and some places where there wasn’t enough. It says it will continue to oxidize over time. Maybe that will help. I think I’ll do much better the next time. I’ve got ideas for several “real” things that might really be updated by this process. You must wash the brushes immediately when done with each step – this stuff dries fast. The brushes do clean up nicely with soap and water. I used a dollar plastic table cloth so that I could spill and not worry – just throw it away when done. The kit has everything you need for your project. 8 oz. of primer, 8 oz. of metallic paint, 10 oz. aging solution in a spray bottle,2 brushes and a stir stick. The description on the web site says it comes with a cloth and stir sticks – my kit had no cloth and only 1 stick. This really was fun and I have enough left over for several more things. It says it will cover 30 sq. ft. It also says it can be used indoors or outdoors. When you use it on something outdoors it speeds up the oxidation process. I don't know how the finish holds up yet because it's just a few hours old at this point.
