are they good to replace grass for my yard to cut down on lawn mower use?

Answer

Depends on the quality. We replaced lawn where it would not thrive because of shade with mondo grass and most of it is doing well.

Yes...very well...keep watered.

does it grow in clay soil

Answer

Mondo grass will tolerate dense clay soils, but will have a hard time spreading it roots. You can help the plant out by digging the hole that you plant it in larger than the pot it has been grwon in to break up the native soil and use some garden soil mixed with your native soil to back fill the hole

I ordered 3 shipments of the mondo grass. The first two were excellent, the last one and most recent was marginal. Dry, yellow and a different color from the first two shipments. Perhaps they came from a different vendor.

Plants were in fair condition upon arrival but haven't grown as well as my others that I purchased from another nursery. Not sure if I'll repurchase plants from HD again.
