This is a product you would use in the bottom of your potted plants to keep the water from getting stagnant and your planting medium from stinking to high heaven. Use anywhere from 1/2" to 2" deep depending upon the size of the planter. The chips are fairly uniform in size. I've included coins in the photo so you can get a size comparison. I've purchased bags of charcoal before in which the pieces had varying degrees of "doneness." These are all the same. There aren't any that are underdone and would be prone to rotting. This isn't a product that you HAVE to use in your potted plants but highly recommended for those indoor ones, especially.

I used this charcoal as a base for my terrarium together with small gravel stones. I also used moss to cheer up the plants and it looks great now. I hope the system will sustain long time with little water because of these charcoals. I also have some hanging flower pots on my walls outside my house, I will try to use it in those pots during he summer.

This is a nice product for both indoor and outdoor plants. I specifically use it on my indoor plants with a good potting soil. The use of horticultural organic charcoal can benefit your plants with a good base to help prevent soil rot, root rot, and absorb excess moisture. This helps your plants get the water they need without getting too much. Some folks also say that charcoal also provides good aeration in the soil which also promotes plant health. Happy planting.

I have had good luck with bio-char after reading about it a few years ago. Sometimes I’ll even go through our campfire ashes and pick out the larger bits of unburned bio-char and mix them in the garden soil or in potted plants. I know that plants like it because when I am harvesting in the fall, I will find those bits of bio-char completely surrounded with tiny plant roots, as though they found it and are trying to get as much out of it as possible.
I like that this brand is organic, although there is no data about how it is produced. I less like the fact that it comes from China, which makes me question the organic quality and lack of production information even more. Still, I am glad that this product is available. Although it has been used for thousands of years, bio-char is hard to find on a retail level. Do your research and determine the proper application rate for your conditions, since professional publications seem to differ quite a bit on this.

Mosser Lee 2.25 quart dry Horticultural Organic Charcoal is the Very Best for my Violets, Orchids and my Bamboo Plants. It holds moisture yet drains excess water. Great for my potted plants with no holes. My Bamboo lived in water for ten years with little to no growth and I planted it in charcoal and potting soil and it took off. This is a Great Product. Wear your gloves as it is charcoal.
