Will this AFCI breaker fit into a Course-Hinds Panel?

Will this AFCI breaker fit into a Course-Hinds Panel?
Asked by: Thomas
There is the issue of both fit and approval. It will depend on the specific catalog number of the load center and when it was made. Fit will depend on the hook rail design and whether not there is a rejection feature that will prevent installation of electronic breakers. We may need pictures showing the hook rail. Approval will depend on what approved breaker types are listed on the label. The UL substitution letters for the AFCI are based on the GFCI listing (type MP-GT). Please send pictures of label and load center to productselection.us@siemens.com.

I was looking at some Square D Combination AFCI circuit breakers and saw the 2-pole ones required a pigtail be ran from the breaker to the neutral busbar. They made some plug-on types but only single pole. Does this breaker require a pigtail to be ran to the neutral busbar? If not, is there a particular Murray 200-amp panel (around 40 spaces / circuits) this would work with? We're trying to find plug-on neutral type combination arc-fault breakers. We mainly need single pole 15-amp and 20-amp breakers but we will require a few double pole 30-amp and double pole 40-amp breakers as well. It's just hard trying to find the 2-pole ones that don't have the pigtail. Thanks!
Asked by: Spork
Hi SporkSchivago, Yes, this Murray two pole AFCI circuit breaker has a pig tail that will have to be connected to the neutral bar. I would recommend this Murray panel, but this breaker will work in any Murray panel you choose (40 space/40 circuit 200 Amp main): http://www.homedepot.com/p/Murray-200-Amp-40-Space-40-Circuit-Main-Breaker-Load-Center-LC4040B1200/202315562?keyword=LC4040B1200

I had this ongoing problem where an AFCI breaker would not stay on. A couple of electricians looked at it and suggested that it may be caused by the shared neutral between two circuits, one of which had a regular breaker and the other AFCI. Neither of them told me there was a product designed to use with AFCI circuits that had a shared neutral. After finding out about this product after some internet investigation, I decided to give it a try. The circuit has been on since I installed this breaker. Please note that this breaker takes up two spaces in your panel. In my case, I had a single height, single breaker AFCI and a single height, double breaker regular circuit. So, this unit with 2 circuits took up the space previously occupied for 3 circuits. Luckily I had a spare breaker in the panel, which worked for me. If you have a tightly packed panel, you may need to put some thought into how to move things around. Pros: - Great solution to a common issue. - Easy to install and use Cons: - Quite expensive - Takes up two spaces in the panel. May require a spare breaker in the panel as explained above.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Murray 220v AFCI breaker meets all requirements Our county building codes adopted the requirement for AFCI breakers for branch circuits in bedrooms. Finding a 220 breaker for a Murray panel was difficult, but Home Depot on-line made it possible. Local electricians were somewhat concerned about AFCI working properly with heaters with fans, etc. But things are now working properly, and the job is complete and waiting for final inspections.
