Particle board shelves fell apart within 3 months - completely useless. Needs to either be reinforced or consider other options.

I had a 4-foot wide empty space down cellar that could accommodate a shelving unit to make things more organized for me. This Muscle Rack Boltless Steel Shelving Unit was PERFECT! It didn’t even take me 15-minutes to assemble. All I needed was a rubber mallet (see pic) I had lying around to tap things into place. The metal post couplers marry the top of the bottom post to the bottom of the top post, by sliding both posts into this coupler. There is a notch in the middle that each post should meet, to confirm fully seated positioning. This shelving unit even comes with plastic covers for the bottom legs, that make direct contact with the floor, to prevent scratching (see pic). I put my level to each of the shelves, vertically and horizontally, and all is level. I have all 5 shelves filled, all of which are now easily accessible. I will be buying more of these units to fill up the rest of my empty wall space in my basement so I can get better organized.

I bought 2 if these units, one 18 inch deep shelves and one 24 in shelves. Liked them so much I bought 2 more and have them in use. Much easier to assemble with 2 people but can be done with one, a few beers and if your neighbors don’t mind loud cursing. My advice, from putting 4 together is to NOT start with bottom shelf as instructed. This makes everything top heavy and it keeps coming apart. Have something to lean it against, start with second shelf, assemble and entire shelf end then lean it against a wall then assemble other end and place board. Once an entire shelf is done it’s smooth sailing. Little round discs that you tap in to keyhole slots do not fit snug enough and tend to work their way loose so I zip tied each corner which stopped that. Units are very sturdy but moving them is tough because you can’t lift by the shelves, even zip tied. Not the best, but well worth the money, especially on sale and has allowed me to really organize my storage room. Time will tell how the particle boards hold up under the weight.

I had bought 4 other like units in the store but this was $20 cheaper. The box it was in was completely open on one end which I didn't notice until loading it. Parts fell out but appeared to be all there. When I began to assemble it at home I saw why it was $20 cheaper. It appeared to be old stock that had been banged around for some time, hence the condition of the box. The material for the shelves was cheap unfinished pressed particle board and the corners were beat up and crumbling. I am having to seal and apply a finish myself, negating any savings and adding more work. The representation online was not what the shelves looked like when assembled, and very different than the units I purchased in store. I made do because of the hassle of returning it. I should have looked at it more thoroughly in the store and refused it there. I don't think I will purchase from Home Depot online again, too risky.

The 4 corner leg sections are 2 pieces each leg and are pressed together end to end into a sleeve of even more thin sheet metal. The fit is tight so you will need to do as I did and very gently tap the pieces together. I strayed to the outer end of the metal and it easily bent. The upside is it is easily bent back into shape. Pressboards are 3/8" and there is no cross member support in the middle. This clearly was designed to look good in pictures, look like sturdy angle iron shelves in the pics, but I don't see it as a 4,000# shelving unit. Maybe 1,000#, 200# per shelf? All of this explains the low price which is the main reason I am keeping it. Very easy to assemble. Only need a hammer and a piece of wood so as to protect the steel.

I haven't loaded them to full capacity, but the steel frame is encouragingly robust and gives me no concerns that it's likely to fail under anything but the most extreme treatment. They're easily assembled with a couple of tools (mainly a rubber mallet, but a block of wood and an ordinary hammer would work as well), or no tools at all and a few blows from something solid to properly seat the rivets in the desired slots occasionally. The only tiny caveat I would make is that assembly is not completely idiot-proof (as this idiot can testify), it is possible to put the shelf supports in the wrong way up if you're in too much of a hurry (or over-confident), but the briefest of glances will tell you the right way up, and if you do happen to choose the wrong way first (a 50-50 shot if you're not paying attention), it's a couple of taps to get them out and put them in the right way. Even with those dumb errors, I doubt if it took me more than 30 minutes to have the whole thing assembled and in place - and that merits another slight warning - fully assembled, these shelves are heavy (which is a good thing), so I wouldn't recommend putting them together too far away from the place where you need them. Also, as with all tall shelving units, fixing them to the wall with a strap or bracket would be advisable. I definitely recommend them for garage/workshop storage.

Do not order online!!!!!!! I made the mistake of buying four of these shelving units online during a daily deal promotion and I am still attempting to get intact shelves. They ship in a relatively lightweight box that does not hold up during shipping. As I said, I bought four shelves. They came in three different deliveries, no big deal, but two of them had to be shipped back because of damage or pieces that fell out during shipping. The two re-ordered shelves shipped separately also and the first one had parts were falling on the ground as the UPS person walked across the yard, so I had refuse shipment on that one also. The three I have received so far are sturdy. They go together easily with a light tap with a hammer. The image shows the first two delivered and were in by far the best condition.

Just put this thing together and it was pretty easy, with a rubber mallet handy. I bought this to put my 500+ cookbook collection on so it will get a test for sure. Right now obviously it is fine and looks great. Sure it is not the best quality (thin shelving with 3 corners arriving banged up) but it still is doing a great job "supporting". Hopefully it will continue to do so as it is suppose to support 4,000 lbs. I will post another update after sometime has gone by to see how it is. Good value if it holds up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value I now own 6 of these. I bought a pair of them over 8 years ago. Loaded them with heavy oily old motorcycle parts on every shelf. I liked them so much I bought 4 more over the years. There have been slight design changes but one thing has remained constant: for the money you can't buy anything that will hold more weight or last as long. Assembly is annoying. The instructions tell you to lightly tap the pieces together. This is not correct. Spend a couple of bucks and buy a rubber mallet (cheap at Home Depot or cheaper at Harbor Freight). This makes assembly much easier. Also, assemble the shelves where you plan to use them. They are a royal pain to move once assembled since the shelf supports pop out of position. I was skeptical of the particle board shelves but I've not had a failure yet.
