About This Product

Use the Pop-Up Drainage Emitter downstream to discharge water captured upstream and carried away from structures, erosion-prone landscapes and poor drainage areas. The Pop-Up Drainage Emitter with Elbow connects to 4 in. sewer and drain pipe and 4 in. triple-wall pipe. As water pressure builds, cap "pops up" to release water at up to 56 GPM and closes when flow diminishes. Cap stays closed when not in use to prevent debris and rodents from entering and potentially clogging the drainage system. The flat profile blends discreetly into the surrounding landscape. Rounded contours on interior edges reduce the potential for clogging and internal ribs provide durability and strength. Flange design prevents turf overgrowth. Weep hole at bottom of elbow drains water left in pipes to prevent stagnation or freezing in cold weather. Cap and cover made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), elbow made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Pop-Up Drainage Emitters are part of a complete drainage system used for stormwater management. They work with pipes, catch basin drains, channel drains, trench drains and drain grates that filter, capture and convey excess water to drain pipes, the pipes carry the water downstream to discharge with a Pop-Up Emitter or to percolate into the ground with a dry well or infiltration trench. NDS offers free tools such as the Home Drainage Center, Calculators and NDS Stormwater Drainage mobile app to help make your project a success.

Highlights

  • Install the pop-up drainage emitter at the lowest point in the drainage system, place in areas away from buildings, landscapes and poor drainage areas
  • Elbow connects to 4 in. sewer and drain pipe and 4 in. triple-wall pipe, connects to other pipe types using appropriate adapters
  • Releases collected water up to 56 GPM
  • Supports pedestrian traffic including lawn tractors, when properly installed
  • Cap on cover pops up as high as 1 in. once water pressure builds and closes as flow diminishes, when not in use, cap stays closed to keep debris and rodents out of drain
  • Flange design prevents grass from growing over the cover
  • Small weep hole in elbow drains out any water in the pipe to prevent stagnation or freezing in cold weather
  • Flat profile design reduces trip hazard posed by open drain, closed position keeps emitter flush to the ground and safe from lawn mower blades rounded contours on interior edges reduce the potential for clogging and internal ribs provide durability and strength
  • Works with a complete drainage system to release collected stormwater runoff and standing water to a discharge point before it causes costly property damage
  • Position pop-up emitter cover at ground level, connect elbow to 4 in. sewer and drain pipe or 4 in. triple-wall pipe underground
  • Comes with 1 pop-up drainage emitter and attached elbow
  • Cap and cover made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) using a combination of virgin and recycled content treated with UV inhibitors to prevent fading and cracking elbow made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) using a combination of virgin and recycled content treated with UV inhibitors to prevent fading and cracking
  • Use adapter (1241) to connect elbow to 3 in. & 4 in. single-wall corrugated pipes or 4 in. sch. 40 pipe, use multiple pop-up drainage emitters for larger drainage problems
  • Capture and convey water upstream with a catch basin drain, low-profile adapter, channel drain or trench drain connected to drain pipes use with a flo-well dry well system and EZ drain gravel-free french drain system to detain excess water and slowly release it into the ground
  • Onsite stormwater management protects the watershed downstream and limits excess runoff which can lead to negative impacts such as erosion, pollution and flooding

Is effective in a gravel pit, at the end of a french drain? Since our drain needs to slope more than the earth does, it will be 2-3 feet deep. Would a good solution be to place an empty bucket upside-down on top of it surrounded by gravel?

This elbow type isn't recommended because the pipe will always retain some water (mosquitos), and its difficult to clean debris out (theres no catch basin). People recommend to use a T-fitting instead of an elbow. Do you offer a T-fitting option?

If 90 degree elbow is at the end of a gently slopped PVC line, does roof run off gather at the 90 degree bend? Does the use of the pop up emitter in this configuration allow maintenance free use or does homeowner need to intervene and clean it out periodi

          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Hi Herlihy, as water conveys through the drain system it will fill the pipe and the more water it receives the water will rise and push and eject the water through the emitter. The Pop-up emitter, opens or operates by hydrostatic pressure, the force of gravity. The pop-up emitter does not eliminate maintenance. The end user must perform preventive maintenance to the drainage systems as needed to remove any foreign objects that might be obstructing the flow of water.

looks like in your video that the pop up emitter empties in the street curb at a non up right angle. how is this picture in your video when it has to be level with the ground at the exit point???

            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Hi lbsb, more water will be needed to push and eject the water from the emitter. The Pop-up emitter, opens or operates by hydrostatic pressure, the force of gravity. As the system takes on more water - water will eventually exit through the pop-up emitter. Any residual water in the pipe system will leach out through the 90-degree elbow.

Will a pop up emitter work in northern states where we have a hard freeze every year.

                1 Answer |
                Answer This Question

Hi Shirl, if you us a pop-up emitter in a climate with hard freezes, you should take proper precautions. to winterize the pop-up emitter: 1. shut off the water supply 2. Flush the system 3. Drain the pipe 5. Protect the emitter by considering installing a protective cover or over the pop-up emitter. this can provide some insulation and shield it from direct exposure to freezing temperatures, reducing the risk of damage. 6. Disconnect and store removable parts, such as the pop-up emitter. It's important to note that even with these precautions, extreme cold temperatures can still pose a risk to pop-up emitters.

                  keep it maintained
As long as you keep the line clean and maintained so debris doesn't build up inside your pipe it works great. put some 1-1.5 inch stone under the cutout so any excess water can drain out of your line.

                    One issue
The cap does seem to come off the pipe pretty easily. I tapped and threaded in a 1/4 inch bolt to thumb tighten so it won't come off when mowing. Pretty easy 5 minute fix.

Works well, but don't mow over it.
This is a breeze to install and works well as a drain. However, don't mow over it. The mower will suck up the cap and destroy it.

                        Works Well
I didn't buy this pop-up drainage emitter to use for my downspouts, which certainly would work too. I used it to connect to the pipe that comes from my sump pump. The is only 2 inch diameter, so I had to use a reducer, but it works very well. Some reviews mention that it might get damaged but the lawn mower, but if you put it level with the soil it can't get sucked up high enough to get damaged by the mower. I certainly haven't had any problems. I like the product because it is easy to install and it looks good, is not obvious in the grass. Since it automatically closes it also prevents dirt and leaves from falling into the drainage pipe.

                        Works great
I installed the NDS 4 in Drainage Emitter cover on an underground gutter drain. We were having problems with debris getting through the grate and clogging up the drain. This solved the problem. I initially had problems with a real heavy rain washing the cover off and our dog pulling it off. That was easily solved with a single self-taping screw. I provided some photos.

The best part of the drainage system.
The NDS 4 in. pop-Up Drainage Emitters with Elbow works very well. It rained after 8 hours after installation, and I have added a short video to demonstrate how well it works. Thanks NDS, for your technology. it really works very well.
