We have steel beams not wood, can this be installed into steel?

Our entire house is made from steel beams and not wood. How would installation be different? Is this product still recommended?
Asked by: DIron
You should not install into the steal joists. However, if you attach a wood joist to the steal joists and make certain that it is being supported by bearing wall you can then install the rack to the wood joist.

How sturdy and flat is the shelf bottom?

I need something to store plywood and pieces of other sheet good so they will stay flat. Would I need to put plywood on the shelf first?
Asked by: Glenn
Depending on how much weight you plan to place on the rack and the type of "sheet" (assuming metal) it might be smart to place a thin piece of plywood first. The rack is strong and has several cross bars across the bottom for even support. No bowing or bending but I could image a sheet of soft metal being slightly damaged by the pattern of the crate that you place your storage items on. Again, would be fine if you place plywood on top or did not load to heavy. This rack is a very good product.

Can this be mounted on an angled garage ceiling?

Asked by: reswanso
Yes, but depends on the "pitch of the roof. You will need to calculate, but you only get two angles to bolt together.

These racks are great, I only took off one star because I ordered white, but Home Depot sent me the gray/black version. Kind of bummed about that, but I wasn't about to go through returning these just because of the color (each box is about ~100lbs, and I bought two). I loaded them up last night, and they seem quite sturdy. I even sat up in there to add an additional 160lbs, haha. Obviously these are for "static" loads, not "dynamic" loads... I watched a video on YouTube where a guy is shaking them back and forth and showing how "dangerous" they are... but they weren't made for that, so just be sensible with your use case :) I use mine to store wood and other building supplies out of the way, and they seem perfect for that. I installed them by myself, and the first one took about 2.5hrs while the second took just under 2hrs.

Each was very well packed in the carton and the cartons are very heavy, over 100 lbs each. The rack is very well made and installed fairly easy. Since the sections and struts interlock it is key to make sure the ceiling attachment brackets are installed in the correct spot to keep the rack true and square. The unit is very sturdy and solid. I installed one at the full 96 inch size and the other at 72 inches due to space restraints. The rack design is very versatile.

No issues with the parts or bolts snapping during install (pre-drilling as per instructions helps). Looks nice, does the job. The only negative is the shortest height is either 18, or 27. They provide 18 inch down rods and 27 inch down rods. Without cutting them there's no way to make a combination in between 27 or 18. I installed over the garage door using the 27 inch down rods, when installing I had to place it a few feet inward from the garage door opening and as the door passes underneath it I have about 1/4 inch clearance as the garage door opens (the first garage door panel needs to be flat as it starts to pass under it or it will hit due to the angle of the garage door as it opens). The other note is you lose 3 inches. 18 inch down rod gives you 15 clearance from the ceiling to the base of the shelf, 27 gives you 24 inch clearance from the ceiling. If you install at the back of the garage anywhere behind the garage doors then none of this matters as you can make the depth whatever you want. (18, 27, or combining both down rods 27+). Overall nice product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits a 20x20 garage perfectly Bought the racks 3 months ago and couldn’t be any happier. I have 2 sets of tires, welder, and air small compressor stored on it when not in use. Holds very well. I have additional L brackets installed on the wall side of each rack to prevent it from moving when you need to access it. If you have lighter items, you don’t have to. Its just a safety measure for me and vehicles parked under the racks. Installation was a breeze. Hardest and most time consuming is marking your pilot holes. After installing the mount, everything else is bolt on. Did it alone but I had the delivery guys dolly it to my garage so I don’t have to lift the 150+ lbs package by myself. Having an impact driver makes the installation so much easier. Took me 40 mins to install one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Missing Hardware After receiving the storage rack I opened the box and began to inventory the contents. After completing the inventory I realized the mounting hardware was missing. I double and triple checked just to be positive. Per the instructions I contacted the customer service department for New Age Product. It was very difficult to reach a live person and I was unable to leave a voice message because the mailbox was full and would not accept new messages. After MANY attempts i was able to speak with someone after a few days. I explained the situation and they agreed to send the missing mounting hardware. It's been 10 days since I first tried to report the problem and I'm still waiting on the missing hardware. They shipped out the missing hardware using the slowest and cheapest shipping option available. My review is based on my experience and not the product as I've been unable to install due to the missing hardware.

The instructions are not as clear as you should expect, however, with two people collaborating we figured it out. We have floor to ceiling racks all around our garage walls filled to capacity, so this was the only alternative for more storage other than renting a storage unit. We used it to store all our 2x4's and extra wood from left over projects. Extra wood shelving, plywood etc. Says 600 lb limit. How does one figure out just how much stuff weighs when all stored on the rack? Has not fallen yet LOL. We are considering getting another one since this one went so well.

I attached the one side against the wall to studs rather than suspending from ceiling and suspended the other side from the rafters. I suggest that if you do decide to attach the one side to the wall studs, use a 2x4 cut to length to match your stud spacing plus a couple inches longer for insurance. Also, when you attach the rack to those studs that you have cut, place approximately three half or 3/4' diameter washers between the frame of the rack and the 2x4s before you bolt it into the wall to allow you enough space to place the floor down. Otherwise you won't have enough room for the wire racks to fit over the frame. Also, you will need at least eight three and a half inch lag bolts by 3/8" to attach those two by fours to the wall studs which are not included in the package. This is a great shelving unit. I am purchasing a second one soon. My neighbor has two of them and loves them. Great for any garage but in my case I have a small garage with a tandem and need room to park two vehicles inside. The shelf is built very well with tough steel framing. It'll take a beating. Installation goes much easier with two people but it is achievable by yourself. Just have at least two ladders for convenience and take your time. It took me about three and a half hours working steady and constantly checking my work.

I want to give it 4.75 stars, but I just can't quite give it 5 because of the CONS listed below. PROS: 1. Very sturdy (at least so far). 2. The wire "floor" folds over the edge of the frame to make loading heavy plastic bins easy to store. 3. The overall fit and finish is great. No sharp edges. Everything screwed together exactly as designed. CONS: 1. My ceiling joists are 16" apart, which, if I understand correctly, is the standard. This makes the 72" options useless if you're going with the "perpendicular" installation. They should drill holes to allow 64 and or 80" options. 2. The diagrams for attaching the vertical angle posts to the ceiling angle brackets are wrong. (Page 9, the diagrams for step 13) If you install the ceiling brackets so that they are 48" from the left end of one to the left end of the other, and then install the vertical posts in the second-from-the-left hole in each ceiling bracket, the faces of the vertical posts facing each other will be 49.5" (give or take the thickness of the steel) apart. Since the short perimeter beams are 48" long, the verical posts will be angled in a little. Instead, the vertical posts should be attached in the #3 hole on the left side and the #2 hole on the right side, so that the two vertical post faces facing each other are right in the middle of the ceiling bracket and are thus 48" apart. I bought two racks and figured this out between installing the first and second. The second one together so much easier. 2. The vertical posts come it two lengths - 18" and 27". if you want to mount the deck at, say, 24" from the ceiling, you have to either cut 3" from the 27" posts or leave the posts long, and leave a possible head-bonking hazard.
