We have steel beams not wood, can this be installed into steel?

Our entire house is made from steel beams and not wood. How would installation be different? Is this product still recommended?
Asked by: DIron
You should not install into the steal joists. However, if you attach a wood joist to the steal joists and make certain that it is being supported by bearing wall you can then install the rack to the wood joist.

How sturdy and flat is the shelf bottom?

I need something to store plywood and pieces of other sheet good so they will stay flat. Would I need to put plywood on the shelf first?
Asked by: Glenn
Depending on how much weight you plan to place on the rack and the type of "sheet" (assuming metal) it might be smart to place a thin piece of plywood first. The rack is strong and has several cross bars across the bottom for even support. No bowing or bending but I could image a sheet of soft metal being slightly damaged by the pattern of the crate that you place your storage items on. Again, would be fine if you place plywood on top or did not load to heavy. This rack is a very good product.

The part that took the longest was finding the studs in my garage ceiling and marking the holes to drill accurately to get started. Once you get the holes done and the anchors in the ceiling fastened, it speeds up pretty quickly from there. I would highly recommend keeping the bolts on the anchors and the leg/anchor joint 95% tight. This makes it easier to shift the legs slightly to get the rack frame parts in if you did not perfectly measure out the spacing. If you tighten everything 100% up front and is a bit off, you will struggle getting the next pieces in. Once installed, was very stable and sturdy. I bought a 5/8" BCX plywood sheet to put in over the grating. Since the width is actually just under 93" when legs taken into account, I had to cut a few inches off the end of the 4x8 sheet, but worked great after that. I bought 2 racks, first one took about 6-7 hours to install w/o rushing. The second was much faster, like 3-4 by myself.

It will be about a 2 hour job to install if your garage ceiling is unfinished with exposed ceiling joists. If all you have are rafter ties, probably on 48" centers, you will probably have to add some support. This will add at least an hour to the project. Most people will probably have either ceiling joists on most likely 16" centers holding roof rafters or trusses which will probably be on 24" centers. We had trusses with a 2x4 bottom chord and drywall. Add an hour or two if you have drywall and you want the shelving square and the screws centered in your ceiling joists/bottom chords. You will want an electronic stud finder if you don't have one. Really, most of the installation is a one person job except for measuring where to put the supports and putting up/connecting the two 8' support pieces that slide/snap into the four vertical ceiling angle iron supports.

Only needed my wife's help to hold long straight-edge to ensure proper alignment with the supports. Took about 4 hours to install. Instructions easy to follow. Only installation problem occurred installing the middle brace. Had followed the instructions on connecting the side rails for 8 feet, connecting with the top bolts and nuts first, the the side ones. When I tried to install the middle brace, I saw the mounting holes were not aligned on one rail. Fix was easy enough - loosen bolts, insert brace bolts, then retighten side rail bolts. Rest fit together nicely. Also bought package of 6 j-hooks, 2 large and 4 small. They mount on the legs from the ceiling hold the rack, mounting in the holes. 2 of the small j-hooks won't go down properly in the holes without a good hammering; this would make it extremely hard to re-adjust later on.

I now have two of these racks hanging from my ceiling. There are 8 legs in the kit. Four legs are 18" long while the other four are 27" long. The legs can be combined for a total of 42" after loss of overlap for structural stability. With the outside frame you lose about 3 inch's of the legs overall length. Initially I felt like the 18" legs would be perfect for what I planned on storing but after I lost the 3 inches for the frame I realized I was going to have to use the 27" legs. This almost became an issue as I have low ceiling's and I am 6'-0". Once installed at the 27" length I miss the frame by about 1/2". Where it did become an issue is with our vehicles a Chevy Tahoe and a Ford F-150, both of which stand over 6'-0" height. I can not park both cars in the garage without altering the legs which I am pretty sure would void the manufacture's warranty. So as of now we only park one car in the garage. My only suggestion to the manufacture is to consider making the legs the same length. I feel you could still achieve the 42" max length and give consumer more storage options.

This is an excellent value - would be nice to have a full size paper template to pin or tape to Cieling of space to be utilized - in my case the garage cieling is 12 feet high and measuring for a 4’ x 8’ area with exactness was difficult for one person while hanging off a ladder .

Only had the rack up for a few days and I don't plan to ever put 600 lbs. on the rack. The insulation was not easy because on the material in my garage ceiling. I could not find the joist with a stud finder. I had to go into the attic to locate the joist. The material is sturdy and should hold up for years. Putting 600 lbs. on your joist may cause sagging so you might want to consult a contractor before purchasing. Also, because of my standard ceiling height and the storage bins I wanted to put up on the rack I had to cut the longer vertical supports to my desired length. The short supports were to short and the longer supports would cause the rack to hang to low. A cut off saw took care of the problem.
