Questions & Answers

The instructions say that if you want a depth greater than 18 inches to bolt an 18 inch adjustable arm to a 27 inch adjustable arm. My question is why can’t I just use the 27 inch adjustable arm without the 18 inch piece?

Answer This Question

Thanks for your inquiry, Ryan! The installation manual states that if you want a height greater than 18 inches, you should bolt an 18-inch vertical angle post to a 27-inch post using two 1/4” x 3/4” bolts, two 1/4” lock nuts, and four 1/4” washers. Ensure one bolt is on each side of the post with the keyholes aligned in the same direction. This setup provides the necessary stability and support for your installation. If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're here to help!

We bought the adjustable 4x8’ max size overhead storage rack? Can I install it as 2 4x4’ individual racks

    Answer This Question

Hi Aleasa, thanks for choosing NewAge Products! The VersaRac is designed as one adjustable overhead rack, and while it can be adjusted to 6 ft. or 8 ft., it cannot be separated into two individual 4x4' racks. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

The vertical supports can be shortened to raise the height by simply cutting them in the right location between holes.  They system cannot be dropped lower without purchasing longer uprights or bolting on upright extensions.

can I install this rack in my "TuffShed with a 8/12 roof, 7' walls?
            ByJan 6, 2020

            Answer This Question

If by TuffShed you mean one of the pre-fab wooden sheds sold by Home Depot, then yes, it would probably work, but, depending on the design and construction, I'm not sure that the VERSARAC would be able to hold anywhere near its 500+ pound rated capacity. I would suggest that, instead of the VERSARAC, you purchase a few pieces of 2" X 6" lumber, a 4' X 8' piece of 3/4" plywood (custom cut to fit), a box of 3" deck screws, and build a big shelf inside your shed instead. That way the load would be supported by the walls and not by the ceiling.

              No.

              By|Jan 8, 2020

Hello Dan, Thank you for your inquiry. VersaRac can be installed on wooden stud and not on TuffShed. If you need any assistance, please feel free to reach out to us on our customer service line at 1-877-306-8930 option 1 and we will be happy to assist you with any concerns.

                By|Jan 8, 2020

You can as long as you're willing to make any necessary mods. If your TuffShed walls are only 7' long, you'll have to reduce the length of this rack from 8' to 7'. If you meant that the walls are 7' high but long enough to fit it, then it's just a matter of deciding how high you want to hang it since it'll obviously be in the way for walking in if you hang it lower than your height. With an 8/12 pitched roof and I assume you mean there are no ceiling joists, then with the rack's 4' depth the front legs will need to be about 32" longer than the back legs to make it level. Since the legs allow a max hanging distance of about 40", you've got 8" to play with. So yes, it can be installed in your shed.

You can put it anywhere it will fit. Your shed seems a little small for this 4’x8’ rack.

How much wood (minimum depth or thickness) do the screws need to bite into to hold this rack successfully? Meaning is one 2x4 laying flat horizontally good as it's only technically 1.5 inches thick that way? That is how my trusses are built versus the 2x4 being vertically built where it would have 3.5 inches to bite in to.

                      Answer This Question

Hello Shawn, Thank you for your inquiry. The VersaRac needs to be installed into your ceiling joists/wall beams (cannot be installed into engineered joists or steel beams). If your joist spacing is not 48", 72" or 96" apart than you need to span a joist hanger. If your ceiling is finished with drywall, installing a joist with joist hangers will require cutting a hole in the drywall. The VersaRac width can be adjusted from 72"W - 96"W and the height can be installed at 18"H or 27"H - 42"H. If you need any assistance, feel free to reach out to us on our customer service line at 1-877-306-8930 option 1 and we will be happy to assist you with any concerns.

No less than 3/4”. You should be mounting directly to the truss, which would have more than enough depth.

                        By|Nov 27, 2019

You do have 4 slots in each plate to anchor to the 2x4. So in that sense there should be enough "bite" in the wood ,BUT....the lag screws that came with the rack is not threaded at the last inch or so nearest to the head so for you this may be in an area where it's past your "bite" area. If you have access to the attic or crawl space , you could support the screw areas with another piece of 2x4 laying on top of the first 2x4. With this layout, I wouldn't store a heavy load more that 250 lbs.

                          By|Nov 26, 2019

I ran 5/16 x 3 in lag screws up through 1/2 drywall into 2x6 and loaded my racks heavy. They have been up for 3 years and no problems. You probably need to add additional 2x on top of the flat 2x where you are attaching to or run a bolt through from the top.

Could I use a GRK screw, like a #10 x 4inch, such as this one: https://www.homedepot.com/p/GRK-Fasteners-10-x-4-in-R4-Self-Countersinking-Flat-Head-Multi-Purpose-Screw-50-per-Pack-103141/203525231 Instead of the lag screws that come with this kit? Would the GRK screws hold as good or better than the lag screws or no?

You could, but #10 is fairly light and the head is not designed for this application. GRK screws are great, but for this application I'd use their flat head type. A 1/4" diameter or greater will hold very well. If you just have to use the screws you identified, just make sure there's plenty of interference between the head and the hole in the bracket, perhaps using a tight-fitting washer, and it wouldn't hurt to use two per corner.

You should be fine using grk screws. They are construction quality and make for less labor. You’ll just want to make sure to use a washer.

You would be better off using 3/8 lag bolts vs # 10 screws, in order to support the weight of the rack and contents.

                                    By|Nov 26, 2019

I would use the lag bolts furnished with the rack. Why use another type screw? You are concerned with counteracting pullout forces (weight) of the load. The 8 furnished screws have thick heads and threads to bear the load.

Hello Shawn, Thank you for your inquiry. The Lag bolts that comes with our VersaRac ceiling mounted storage rack is tested and specifically made for this storage rack. We do not recommend GRK screws or any other company lag bolts to be used for our rack as they are not tested by us. If you need any assistance, please feel free to reach out to us on our customer service line at 1-877-306-8930 option 1 and we will be happy to assist you with any concerns.

Your question requires a level of engineering knowledge that exceeds mine. My answer would be "probably," but why do it? The manufacturer stipulates and provides lag screws that they deem appropriate to the task and the warranty they include with the product. Using another screw would undoubtedly void the performance guarantee, so why risk it?

You need a stud or rafter to screw into I would not take a chance because of the weight of the unit itself and anything you may place on it. I put 4 lags into each bracket into the ceiling to make sure it held.

This unit is designed to bolt/screw into a roof beam. If you have that behind the plaster, you should be good-to-go.

D ADJUSTABLE CEILING MOUNTED STORAGE RACK will work on ANY CEILING FINISH as long as you securely screw the lag bolts into the beams behind whatever ceiling finish you have. These racks are designed to hold a lot of weight so you MUST MAKE SURE the bolts go into beams and not just lath.

I would not feel comfortable anchoring this unit to just plaster, just not sufficient structural support to hold heavy loads. Need to tie into joists.

                                                    By|Aug 17, 2019

It will work fine on plaster if you are careful about locating the position and direction of ceiling joists. The vertical supports must be attached to short sections that are bolted to the ceiling joists; and for the rack to function safely and properly, the attachment bolts/screws must be carefully centered on the joists.

The product had decent instructions, but I can't see how this is meant for Canadian standards with ceiling studs 16 inches apart, unless you install at the full length of 96 inches and perpendicular to the ceilings joists. My issue was it was going over the opening of the garage and I wanted to have at a minimum 27 inches depth. (It comes with 18 inch depth as well but I wanted to maximize the storage based on my situation. I think this was meant for US specs perhaps? You can add your own ceiling struts but that meant it will lower the overall depth at a margin that simply wouldn't work for me. If your joists are 12 inches apart, no problem, if it's 16 inches apart (like all of Canada), prepare for custom work. Otherwise, very strong and sturdy. Better then the other two brands I currently have hanging.

While the VersaRac is designed to be adaptable, it might need a bit of tweaking for your specific setup. For maximum depth, installing perpendicular to the joists or adding extra joists might help. We’ll definitely pass your feedback along to our team to improve future versions. It's great to know that, despite the installation hurdles, you find the VersaRac strong and sturdy compared to other brands. Thanks for sharing your experience! newageproduct

Was ready to go with a different brand but saw these become available again and on sale as well so I picked up another one. Very happy with both now as it’s great to get misc stuff off the ground and make the garage so much neater.

                                                          Love the adjustability
I put these up myself and it was so easy by the 3rd one o could put it together by myself... although I don't recommend it a helper buddy is a good idea. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. The materials are good quality...this this is sturdy. My advice to you is do not fully tighten the nuts just lightly snug them up and once you get it all out together then go back and tighten all the nuts.

NOT SUITED FOR MODERN CONSTRUCTION HOME GARAGES - It does say it is "designed to be installed into wood joists only and NOT to steel joists". However, nowhere in the description does it say it is NOT to be installed to engineered wood joists (which is a large percentage of new-ish homes these days). As soon as I opened it and gave a glance at the manual, I see the last page that clearly and emphatically addresses modifications to be made to engineered ceiling joists should you decide to proceed with installation. Even if my garage ceiling was not drywalled, modifications would take tons of labor, materials, time and quite possibly a construction professional to perform. Adding the fact that it is drywalled, this includes cutting, removing, replacing, patching and painting ceiling PRIOR to installation. At first I thought to ignore these warnings but after doing a little more research, I did learn it is really a big risk to install it without modifying the ceiling structure as those "I" beams are not engineered to hold weight pulling from below. Went to the all-mighty and savvy internet looking for answers and could not find anyone recommending installing to engineered joists in a safer or easier way than described in manual. Therefore, after spending the $170 + shipping + borrowed truck to pick up, it will take much more than that to have it installed. I can only hope that everyone here that installed it is aware of the safety hazard this represents and that they did their due diligence in double checking theirs was solid wood joists. Mine is going back to the store. HOME DEPOT: Please try to add that description to item title so people know what they're getting into. Something like "NOT FOR ENGINEERED JOIST - CONFIRM YOUR TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION BEFORE PURCHASING AND/OR INSTALLING" would have been be very helpful.

I think the rack is of fairly good quality. The biggest downside is that the mounting points are non-adjustable, meaning that if they don't line up pretty much perfect with your ceiling joists, it is an issue. Because my garage is fully sheetrocked (including ceiling) and there is no way to easily access the joists from the attic space there to add a cross joist, I couldn't mount this the way it's supposed to be mounted. So I had to MacGuver it. For a rack designed to handle a good amount of weight, this took careful planning and measuring, and purchasing some hearty Spax screws (I used 5/16" 4 inch lag screws) to mount it into the wall studs. While I'm satisfied with the end result, it took a lot of effort. Refer to pics. This product would be much better if the mounting points were slightly adjustable, like being able to go a few inches either way, for when it doesn't line up perfectly.
