Is this hollow or solid? Of what is it composed (virgin vs re-cycled) and what percentage of each? Care?
Asked by: JR17
The "Columbus Series" denotes solid boards, with a grooved edge on one side of its length and a finished, radius edge on the other. They are meant to be used, in the main, as edge pieces or as stair treads. A particular type of fastening clip is available to secure this board to your framing and they must be aligned the length of the board so that they snap into the retaining groove located close to the radius edge.Additionally, the maker produces its "Magellan Series" board which is grooved on both edges (and is the most customary choice of material) and also a "Cortes Series" which are solid boards with radius edges on both sides. If you are looking for a hollow board, ask for the "Voyager Series." The hollow boards weigh a great deal less than the solid boards, but you will of course sacrifice some measure of solidity. I would probably install the hollow type boards on framing that is 12" on center, as opposed to 16" which does real well when you are using solid pieces. The manufacturer advertises the boards as being composed of 95% recycled materials, approximately 60% reclaimed wood fibre, including sawdust, and 40% recycled polyethylene (HDPE) plastics such as bottles. The factory is located in China. Care is pretty simple, just regular sweeping and occasional mopping. The installation manuals recommend that you apply a sealant to all cut ends of the planks, where the dense core is exposed to the elements. Otherwise, the boards are protected by the exterior wrap around the core boards. If these were to become cosmetically damaged, the manufacturer sells repair kits which can address minor scratches and nicks. Moreover, you have a choice of finish when you come to apply your boards. One side of the boards shows a "wood grain" type of finish, while the flip side is smooth and uniform. Although this is admittedly subjective, I like the appearance of my new front porch and find no great shortcoming with the boards. I used the solid series, which are quite heavy, by the way, about 50 lbs for a 16-foot length.

As far as I know, the boards are all nominally 1x6 or 0.9 in thick x 5.5 wide.

Bought 4 of these, to surround the first part of the deck. Wanting to cut these at 45 degrees for a nice, clean look. But...the starter clips require a horizontal, outward slide to fit the board into place. How do you get the last board in place without a, screws through the top, and b, without a gap in the ends? A gap would leave two obtuse 45 degree ends open for snags and honestly, this stuff chips fairly easily, and like screws, it would look like poo. Any help?
