What is the spacing between balusters?

What is the spacing between balusters?
Asked by: DeckInColorado
I purchased these and used them on my deck. With respect, the spacing at the ends (where it meets the post) is significantly greater than 4" - a lot closer to 5" (without having them in front of me, I'd estimate 4 5/8"). I had to shave off parts of each end when I used this railing in order to meet code.

Will the metal rust?

Asked by: Bill
The insert on the top railing is galvanized steel. The insert on the post is galvanized steel. The balusters are painted aluminum. The metal flanges which attach to the post are painted steel which I believe is also galvanized. The screws used to secure them to the posts are common metal screws - not galvanized or otherwise rust-resistant. The bolts used to secure the posts to the deck also do not appear to be coated or otherwise protected. I just installed mine - we'll see how they hold up.

Functionally, it is excellent. Installation instructions are clear. Some caveats, though: The top and bottom rail are a slightly lighter color than the posts (which must be purchased separately). May not be a bit problem for you, but it was slightly annoying for me. Installation of these railings is moderately to significantly difficult, however. (Full disclosure: solidly competent DIYer). For one, you must have steel blades as well as composite blades. For another, the galvanized steel insert on the posts is absurdly difficult to get through - I have burned through 4 cobalt drill bits on a 12x16 deck with small landing and stairs (about 20 sections). Finally, the options for securing the posts are through-bolts for wood or lag screws with anchors for concrete. Don't most people secure top-down deck posts into the joists? The through-bolts are not long enough for that, so I had to use the lag bolts without anchors. Probably still fine, but it makes me nervous since I'm going off script. The biggest issue is the pre-fab nature of the product, causing several problems. One, the railings come with a default spacing on either end of nearly 5", which is longer than code in most states. You must cut off part of the ends of each one, shortening the listed/max span. Doable, but annoying. Two, due to the holes for balusters being pre-punched and the length of the flange which supports it against the posts, there is only a very small window of possible span options. You must leave at least 3" between hole and post, but no more than 4", and for each pre-drilled hole there is an even smaller window (about 5/8") in which you can land. This is not necessarily a design flaw, and I'm thankful for the pre-punched holes in terms of workload, but be aware that you MUST read the manual and meticulously plan *every* post location and railing span *before* framing your deck (as this affects joist placement, blocking placement, etc.). Perhaps this would have been obvious to a non-DIYer, but it was an unpleasant shock to me that the product did not allow me to put my posts where it made the most sense for them to go. Finally, be aware that for 36" railing you must shave down every post (except for ones at the bottom of a stair run). Again, doable but annoying. TL;DR - Works just fine, looks really good, but a serious pain to install. Not confusing, just requires a LOT of prior planning, specialty tools, and several unnecessary annoyances.

The ones I got to replace broken ones were marked FRAGILE. They were all fine. Very complicated to put together. You must have a chop saw that cuts wood and metal.
