Q:Why is there this carpeted like area vs just being rubber all the way around. Seems like that will collect grease spatters and get soaked during rains etc. Not sure why it's not just all rubber.

Don't use on concrete decks
As a few others have reviewed it doesn't perform well on concrete. Had the mat two weeks with a Nexgrill 4 burner grill on top of it. The wheels caused the mat to stick to the deck. And then when you pull the mat up it rips. See photo after 2 weeks use.
