    Answer This Question

A:  I tested it on a wood grain surface and it gave back a good match of the color but couldn't identify a paint brand or color name. Makes sense to me since I don't know of a paint that leaves a wood grain.

A:  The Nix Mini takes an average under it's measurement area. (About the size of a dime) Really works well for paints where you don't want to zoom in too close and pick up on weird variances on the surface.

    by|Oct 1, 2018

A:  I personally would say it works best on a solid, smooth color. We tried matching a couple pieces of solid-color fabric, but the texture and shadowy spots created by the threads seamed to throw the sensor off. It was still close, but perhaps not as close as matching it by eye. It did seem to do OK when I tried matching porcelain, which can be difficult due to the glaze. It can identify flat color accurate to the manufacturer and specific paint name and number. We tested that on paint colors we have used.

      by|Mar 22, 2019

A:  As far as I can tell, it only identifies a single color.

        by|Jan 14, 2021

A:  It’s not even capable of scanning flat color if you want to be sure of an exact match

When I first saw this I was quite skeptical. You're meaning to tell me a little walnut sized device can detect paint colors? It surprisingly can and offers a bit more than I excepted. As mentioned the device it quite small and is powered by an internal battery. The included USB cable makes charging easy. Once I found the app (Android) installation was easy and I was able to sync things quickly. I then went around to sample the colors in my home. It only takes a second or two and then you can determine the best match from a large database of paint brands and colors. This is where some expectation is needed on your end. As best as I can tell it's going to offer up what it think are the best matches but may not be the perfect match. In my instance our living room is painted 'White Lie' by Behr. This ended up being second on the list of suggested matches. Pretty darn close. So if you're anticipating matching the unknown color the previous homeowner painted your bathroom you may be disappointed. However as a tool to get you in the range, say while you're out and see something you like and want to match this would be great for that. You can also store the colors and swatches if you wanted to catalog you home or create profile. If I was an interior decorator I'd totally own one of these.

This color sensor is probably the coolest tool I have! I am a big technology geek so something that I can use with my phone is always a plus! Setup was super easy download the app, connect the app to sensor and you will be reading colors in no time! It is wonderful that you can select the paint brand as well and it will give you the exact type of paint to purchase! I tested it out on my wall that had recently been painted and I still had the paint can and it gave me an exact match to the Behr paint I had purchased. If you want the ability to match and type of color to paint this is the tool for you!

This Nix Mini is one of the coolest sensors on the planet. If you saw a color and said I would love to paint my room that color now you can. With the Nix and your cell phone it takes just seconds and you will have the name of the color and the paint swatch to match. Then all you need to do is go and get the paint. Ah you say which paint? And I would say all of them,Yep you can pick from all the major paint brands,Pick your brand Use the Nix to scan a color then you get that brands color number and swatch, easy. You do need to download the app for your phone in Android or IOS.It will connect threw blutooth and take about 2 to 3 seconds to get your results. It can also offer different colors to coordinate the color you scanned. This has endless possibilities for home renovations or just sprucing up the kids room.It is only limited by your imagination.

Great concept. Failed execution. Infuriating app, user interface, and device experience! Try again Nix! We’re “serial re-modelers” and do a lot of painting and decorating, so the Nix Mini Color Sensor (Model # CQ-2DG6-8JJ6) seemed like a great tool to find and match colors for paint, furniture, and decoratives. And it might be, if we could get it to work. But we couldn’t. And we spent lots of time trying. And we ARE tech savvy. Installing the app was easy. Two different iPhones (less than a year old) and an iPad Air, all running iOS 11.x. We followed the brief instructions, ensured the Nix Mini was plugged into a USB and charging, and confirmed Bluetooth and Location Services were on. Wait, what? Bluetooth I get, but why are Location Services required? If you like to manage your privacy, be warned that turning location services on is MANDATORY for the Nix. I actually got the Nix Mini to connect to my iPhone ONCE, but it required rebooting the phone (since when do you have to reboot a phone for an app to work?). It scanned one color. Then we tried to connect the Nix to my wife’s iPhone and iPad, but no matter how many times we rebooted, uninstalled/reinstalled, confirmed services, charged the Nix, connected it to USB, disconnected it, reset it ...it would no longer connect to ANY of the devices, including the phone it initially connected to. The documentation does warn that it can only talk to one mobile device at a time… just “Disconnect” from one device and then connect to the other….except it no longer thinks it’s connected to any of them, so the “Disconnect” option isn’t available! The quick start product instructions that come with the Nix say: “Stop! Do not return to store or vendor! ….connect with our support team….”. OK, sure, maybe I’m missing something so I called...on a weekend…and they’re only open weekdays 9-5 ET. Fine, so I sent an email. That was a week ago. Still no reply. Sorry Nix! You had your chance. NOT recommended!

When you first look at this device, in the package, you can’t help but be a doubting Thomas, I mean, how the heck can such a small device, the size of a $1.00 coin, match up a seeming unlimited number of colors? It can’t, but, the database it connects with, via the net, can. YES it can. Inspection: I downloaded and installed both the Nix Digital and Nix Paints programs on to my iPhone, linked up the Nix mini, first with the Nix Digital software and tested it against five (5) Behr paints in my house. It identified all five in under 10 minutes, not by brand, but by HEX#, sRGB, CYMK (Cyan,Yellow, Magneta and Key (black)). I then disconnected the mini from the Nix Digital software and linked it with the Nix Paints and tested the paints again selecting Behr as the paints to match against. It hit 100%! This tool is great! The cost is nothing compared with time it saves and the way it removes any questions regarding matching a paint. You can even have the Nix Paints match a color to any manufacture’s paint!

So much for capturing the precise paint colors for the 3D Home model I'm constructing to plan out home remodels. This piece of junk kept disconnecting from my Galaxy S8 phone and I found the only way to get it to stay connected even for a few minutes was to reboot my phone (tried reinstalling the Nix Digital and Nix Paint apps as well), unplug the Nix Mini from the charging cable, touch button to connect in the app, then press reset button to get app to see Nix Mini. Not only was the ability to connect to the Nix way worse than lack luster, but even when it did connect the battery would go from 100% charged to 30% after only 10 scans. This is an astronomically different experience than the claim on the Nix website that claims 3,000 scans can be completed on the Mini on a single charge (5,000 scans on the Nix Pro according to the same website). Either I got a defective unit, or this is literally "THE WORST COLOR SENSOR EVER CONSTRUCTED!" Don't waste your money on this hunk of junk. Even if someone offers it for free, I'd still say no thanks and offer a trash can to them so they can put it where it really belongs.

          Difficult to use
The mini 2 has been very difficult if not impossible to get to sync to my phone. Customer service was no help and hung up on me when I asked for a soft copy of the user manual. I would love to know if this device will deliver on the color promises but I cannot get that far to evaluate its actually purpose.

Disappointing. We just moved into a new house, I wanted this to match our existing paint so we can do touchups and not have to redo whole rooms. I had seen in reviews that you need to know the brand of the paint in order to more confidently match the paint. But it just provides a list of numerous paint colors that it calls an “excellent match.” There are even cases where the prior owners left paint cans labeled in the basement, and these are on the list as the 5th or 6th paint match. So looks like we have to repaint entire rooms despite purchasing what I thought would be a time-saving device.

Having only used the Nix Sensor a short time, I have already been very impressed. It has correctly identified colors we have used in our house, and accurately given us color matches for other items. The software app was easy to install and use, and the scanner takes only seconds to match a color.
