I want to replace old feeders similar to this one. I want the tube feeders but with a larger mesh that will allow birds to pick at sunflower hearts or safflower seeds. These used to be for sale everywhere but I can no longer find them.
Asked by: Goldfinch
I believe this one has a bit larger mesh than our other one, you might see it near the fence in my picture.

How to best fill with seed, bottom or top?

At the store where we purchased this finch feeder, they said that it needed to be filled with seed from the bottom. My husband has done that and said it was a terrible mess by the time he had it back upright to hang. I see when reading reviews and star ratings from past customers that they say it is easy to use and simple to clean, etc. So, obviously my question is, was the advice we received incorrect and should we be filling it instead from the top? Thank you, I will await your answer.

Does thistle fall to the ground and attract rats?

Does thistle fall to the ground and attract rats?
Asked by: JQ
The bottom tray catches most of the seed. However, the birds will fling seed off - there's no stopping that. It should be easy to remove the seed from the bottom tray every day or two to minimize the seeds that do fall to the ground.

I use thistle seed for this feeder, but get gaggles of sparrows in spurts. Is there a way to reduce this?
Asked by: Chris
Probably not. Birds are gonna feed on what is available. If you try to scare them off you might scare the finches too. It's like a public buffet and all are welcome to come and try. Good luck.

I've seen up to 7 goldfinches on it (before they start to chase each other off). Other finches and smaller birds use it when the Goldfinches aren't around. It fits thistle seed wonderfully. No problems keeping the top or bottom on (it's metal - if the fit becomes loose over time, it's easy to bend the flanges down a bit to get the friction fit back again). Filling it is easy - twist off the top and pour in the seed. There are two cone baffles inside to keep the seed distributed top to bottom - when filling, the seed drops down through the baffles to the lower levels easily. This has been much better than the 4-perch models I've tried as it fits almost twice the number of birds for the same feeder size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The goldfinches love it! I received this as a gift a few years ago and put it in my backyard. I loved it so much I bought another for my front yard. I put thistle seed in them and get 10-15 goldfinches at a time on each feeder. It also attracts other smaller birds like chickadees. My feeders are older now and getting harder to open the bottom to clean due to rusting. The loop came off the top of one but my husband replaced it with a large eye hook with a bolt on the inside. The mesh is still in good shape and the birds flock to both of them. I keep them out year round.

The bottom piece fell off 5 times before I hung it up. Just hoping now that it doesn’t fall off once it is full of seed!

When it comes apart at the top t it drops to the ground and your seed is wasted or if the bottom tray comes off it empties all the seed on the ground. It should be modified so that both top and bottom attachments are screwed onto threaded section not just interlocked as they are now. The slightest wind and they unlock and the fun begins. NOT!
