Product Overview

Since 1938, Nupla has been an innovator in the development of fiberglass technologies and has earned the reputation as the industry standard for fiberglass striking, cutting, digging, and fire tools. Nupla handles are unaffected by sub-zero temperatures, do not conduct heat or cold and are impervious to industrial chemicals. The materials used in Nuplaglas® handles are all dielectric and will not transmit electrical current. The 48 in. Heavy Duty Round Point Shovel handle is made from pultruded fiberglass with thousands of fiberglass strands and a unique resin making it super strong and resistant to weather, chemicals and insects (unlike most wooden handles). The injection molded poly jacket covering the handle is ergonomically shaped to prevent rolling in the hand. The Shovel can be used for house and road construction, farming, landscaping, utilities, and any other heavy duty application requiring concerted use of force.
  • All Nupla handles are proudly manufactured in the USA
  • All Nupla tools feature lifetime Nuplaglas handles for strength, safety, and durability
  • Nupla's non-slip handle designs can be used in wet conditions where moisture-laden wood or tubular steel would have disastrous results
  • Smooth, resin rich Nupla handle surfaces protect users from splinters and resist UV deterioration
  • All nupla products are warranted against any and all defects in material or manufacturing
  • Classic Lifetime Nuplaglas handles do not absorb moisture
  • Nupla handles are unaffected by sub zero temperatures, do not conduct heat or cold and are impervious to industrial chemicals
  • Nuplaglas handles have a longer job site life expectancy since they are unaffected by moisture, fungus, termites or dry rot that destroy wood handles

The shovel handle is solid

I see in the description the handle is made in the US. What about the actual shovel part?

27" is the length of the handle. The total length is about 39". The "D" handle design is good when you must turn the shovel to provide some torque (twisting force), for example when you need to free a sizeable rock while digging. A straight handle is better if you are simple moving something (sand, gravel, fill dirt) from one place to another. It sounds like you'll be working in some tight spaces, but I wouldn't go with anything shorter than this. A shorter handle length won't provide the leverage you may need.

The Nupla 48 inch fiberglass handle heavy duty round point shovel is a great shovel. Lightweight due to the fiberglass handle, it's also super strong, and has a bit of flex so you don't break anything. Handle is also extra long for some added leverage. Perfect for digging holes, shoveling from a wheelbarrow, etc., this shovel has some grip to it on the fiberglass as well, so you don't lose it or have it slip while you're working. Product is also made in the USA for those who are interested in supporting domestic manufacturing jobs. Great shovel, great value, expect to be using this for years to come.

This is your basic round point shovel with a different kind of handle, the handle is a little larger in diameter at the top and instead of being round it is kind of oval. I have mixed feelings about the handle, time will tell whether I really like it or not. Some of the time using it I thought it felt really nice and other times I thought it felt a little clumsy. The finish on the handle could have been a little better, there were several rough seams and some holes, a little sand paper smoothed it right off, but that should have been done at the factory. The shovel blade is about the same weight and thickness of most other shovels, I thought it could have been just a smidge thicker. The handle feels quite solid with very little flex. The overall length is 57.5" and the blade is about 11 inches long and 9 inches wide, and it weighs about 5.5 lbs. The metal portion of the shovel is about 19 inches long. You will have to decide for yourself if you like the handle or not. But all in all a nice shovel.

Fiberglass Handle Heavy Duty Round Point Shovel. This is a very sturdy shovel. I had broken my previous shovel handle trying to remove some stubborn shrub roots in my yard where they are not needed. I got this shovel to finish the task. This shovel made short work of removing the second one. The shovel blade is very strong, and the handle is very sturdy. The shovel did not have any trouble digging and prying out the tap root of the stubborn plant. I love the fiberglass handle. It is more of an oval shape (not pure round) and is very comfortable to hold. I am very happy with this shovel, and is so strong that I expect it to last me for a long time.

I purchased these for our pipe laying crew as they have to do a lot of hand digging to locate utilities as well as fine tuning the trench. Shovels are often used to pry or even brace other utility lines out of the way of excavator buckets, concrete structures, etc. Very strong, durable and comparably priced.

This shovel replaces an original nupla shovel purchased in 1973 and I am very satisfied with the durability of their products, they are made for commercial use , and the fiberglass handle is well made without being heavy but is built strong and the uv protection has held up over the years being exposed to weather and sunlight , the handle have stayed smooth and never broke or splintered or deteriorated, so the only part that worn out from use is the scoop which the point have worn square, but is still so strong i have never bent it unlike cheap shovels that don't hold up to hard work , so i highly recommend the Nupla shovel as value for the money spent
