Product Overview

Nupla has been an innovator for over 70-years in the development of fiberglass technologies and has earned the reputation as the industry standard for fiberglass striking, cutting, digging and fire tools. Nupla handles are unaffected by sub zero temperatures, do not conduct heat or cold and are impervious to industrial chemicals. Nupla handles are also non-conductive and have a built in dielectric safety feature since Lifetime Nuplaglas is one of the finest insulators available. The 6 lb. Railroad Pick features a power drive handle that gives you optimum performance. Power drive handles are solid fiberglass, made through a pultrusion process that uses thousands of fiberglass strands and a unique resin making them super strong and resistant to weather, chemicals and insects (unlike most wooden handles). The pick has an ergonomic non-slip grip designed to allow usage in slippery conditions and even with gloved hands. It delivers more power, less rebound and vibration shock reducing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. The 6 lb. Railroad Pick is the strongest, safest tool in the industry and ideal for year round use.
  • Smooth, resin rich Nupla handle surfaces protect users from splinters and resist UV deterioration
  • Non-slip handle design can be used in wet conditions where moisture-laden wood or tubular steel would have disastrous results
  • All Nupla tools feature lifetime nuplaglas handles for strength, safety and durability
  • Nupla handles are also non-conductive and have a built in dielectric safety feature since lifetime nuplaglas is one of the finest insulators available
  • Classic lifetime Nuplaglas handles do not absorb moisture
  • Nupla handles are unaffected by sub zero temperatures, do not conduct heat or cold and are impervious to industrial chemicals
  • All Nupla products are warranted against any and all defects in material or manufacturing
  • Nupla will repair or replace at our option, any Nupla product proved to be defective in materials or workmanship during lifetime of the product; Castings, forgings and shovel blades are not covered under this warranty, normal wear, abuse, improper care and negligence are not covered

What are the differences between the 6 lb. and 5 lb. versions of the Railroad pick?

Asked by NeedInfo April 4, 2021

Answer

Almost identical dimensionally, some big guys like to swing a 6lb and others the 5lb, In very hard ground the Penetration will be slightly better with the 6 lb. The handle is the same length on both.

The product photo shows the black line on the handle being on the SIDE of the pick when inserted,...

Asked by Candice October 19, 2020

Answer

Just drop the head down over the handle and bang the black end down on a hard surface, The inside of the head is tapered and as such provides friction/interference fit with the black formed end. It makes absolutely no difference which side the black line on the handle faces, it is just the Nupla Trade Mark line.

How wide is the flat / trenching blade (so not the pick)? This is a basic fact about the product...

Answer

The chisel side of the head is 1.3/8" wide. If you need something wider check out the Pick-Mattock 24-552, which has a blade 3" wide.

What is the width of 5he mattock end?

Asked by Mitch August 21, 2020

Answer

Sorry for the slow response. The width of the Mattock side of the head is 3.5".

Can I remove the head so I could carry the tool in a backpack?

Asked by LittleBrown August 18, 2020

Answer

Yes, the head is an interference fit on the handle. Hold the pick head with the handle hanging down beneath it and strike a hard surface, that releases the head.

A photo view from the top and side (shown) would be a huge help. This way the shape of the blade ...

Borrowed one like this from a neighbor to remove roots from a large maple tree we unfortunately had to take down. While still a lot of hard work to dig and remove the tree's root system, this tool was magnificent. Any type of trenching or digging in hard ground is easier with this tool. So I bought one for myself because my neighbor refused to sell me his.
