Product Overview

  • Ideal for wildlife management due to high acorn production
  • Offers useful summer shade
  • Leaves turn red during the fall
The Nuttall oak is a strong and adaptable oak that provides summer shade and nice fall foliage. The Nuttal is also an important species for wildlife management due to its high production of acorns. The small, reddish-brown acorns are 0.75 to 1.25 in. long. A Nuttall Oak tree must be approximately 20 years old before producing acorns. It has a medium growth-rate and reaches a height of 60 ft. to 80 ft. with a canopy of 35 ft. to 50 ft. The veins on the leaf are pinnate. In the fall, the leaves turn red. Nuttall Oak should be grown in full sun on any soil and is very tolerant of poorly-drained, wet sites. This should make it well suited for the soil conditions found at many urban sites. The plant is shipped in a #1 pot with a minimum height of 12 in. and is hardy in zones 6-9.
  • Leaves turn brilliant red in the fall
  • Mature size of 60 ft. to 80 ft. tall x 35 ft. to 50 ft. wide
  • Perfect tree for wildlife management due to its high production of acorns
  • Provides beautiful summer shade
  • Tree height at time of shipping varies based on growing season

I will have an acorn from the 9/11 trees. How can I grow this acorn?
Asked by: Geraldine
Hi Geraldine. Thank you for your question. According to an article from Gardening Now How on Mar 26, 2013: Fill a one to two-gallon container with native soil and place the acorn on its side. Cover the acorn with one to two inches of soil. Step 3: Plant the acorn in soil at a depth of one and a half times the diameter of the acorn. For example, a one-inch diameter acorn should be planted around one and a half inches deep. Acorns will germinate 2-4 weeks after planting (if they haven't already done so in the refrigerator) Roots will be substantial and some shoots will appear 8-10 weeks after planting. Remember that Oak trees (Quercus spp.) take decades to mature. Depending on their species, the trees are 20 to 30 years old when they produce their first acorns. Even then, acorn production is not consistent from year to year Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Rick_HD_OC
