How can this be cut to a shorter length?

It could, but you should just buy a shorter one that would service your needs? If you just had to cut it, a metal cut-off blade or a hack saw.

Could this be used to hang a 48' mantle?

This is old, but others may have the same question. This may not be a good idea. The weight ratings on a picture hanger likely assume that the hanging item is very flat and close to the wall. A very flat object would mostly just pull straight down on this hanger. A mantle sticks out from the wall - it's cantilevered. This loading requires both the straight vertical force and also forces to compensate for the offset or extension of the part. The additional forces needed are something to pull the top of the mantle back against the wall and something to push it out at the bottom. You can hold an object up a wall and simulate bending/tipping it down to see it separate from the wall at the top and push into the bottom. OR hold something like a heavy book or board out. You might be able to feel the need to pull back the top and push out against the bottom. That said, it may still work. If you were to try it, I would recommend putting the cleat up as high as you can on the back of the mantle. That way it's most effective for that force to pull the top back against the wall. Another issue is that if you bumped it, it could fall off. It is just being held down by it's own weight. If someone stood up after tending the fire and bumped their head it could very well knock the mantle off of the cleat. You might be able to fix this with something extra fastened to the wall above it to stop is from lifting up. Also as others mentioned, you would need some space hollowed out in the back of the mantle for it to fit inside. Otherwise it'll hold the mantle off of the wall by the thickness of this system. I think the better solution here is a floating shelf bracket. Or metal threaded fasteners that thread into studs in your wall and slide into holes in the mantle. Or you could do decorative brackets or corbels to hold it up.

How long is this? Do I need more than 1 to mount a 6ft mirror horizontally?

The metal is 18" long, and the packaging is 20.9" Of course, they don't mention that on the website.

What size are the screws for the wall piece and the piece that attaches to whatever is being hung?

I was impressed with the 1 1/2" screws that were well suited to just penetrate sheet rock only. I was lucky to hit a stud on each mirror I hung, so it really felt secure. The small screws for mounting the cleat to the mirror were more than adequate.

I had two large, 3' x 5' pictures to hang side-by-side on a high wall in my living room...a real challenge to do by one person. The French Cleat was the answer to my dilemma. The result was perfect...perfectly spaced and level. Much better than trying to use hooks and/or wire hung options.

This product worked as advertised and I would recommend it to anyone. It is easy to install. I recommend attaching to a wall stud if you're hanging anything with weight. I used 2 hangers to mount a guitar rack to a wall in my living room.

This wall hanger securely fastened my large mirror to the wall, but the mirror doesn't lay flush with the wall on the bottom. It sticks out from the wall about 2 inches. There's no way to fix this without compromising the structural integrity of the cleats. Probably would choose a different wall hanging method next time.

Works as advertised. A friend of ours made us a wooden cross; rather heavy, about 50 lbs. I needed something to handle the heavy mounted cross and the "Hangman 200 lb. works nicely. The install was difficult because of the uneven stone structure of our home.

I purchased 3 of these to use to mount decorative panels on my walls. The panels were about 30 lbs each, so these worked perfectly (see picture). I was pleasantly surprised by the quality hardware provided, including course thread drywall screws and wood screws that did an outstanding job of gripping the cleats tightly without stripping out from the drywall or the hardwood panel frames. A small bubble-level is included to help mount the wall-cleat. They only project the hanging about 1/4" from the wall which was perfect to create a nice shadow line. I like the fact that the cleats allow for some lateral movement to fine-tune the position of your wall item without a need to re-mount the cleat to the wall. This was the feature that made this product so attractive to me. Glad I found these. They worked great, and were a cinch to install.

perfect professional hanger for heavy items
I purchased this hanger for a wine rack i made for my sister for christmas (knowing there was going to be 6 bottles of wine and 6 wine glasses plus the 10lb wine rack). This hanger will do that with plenty of lbs to spare. Perfect size to get the wall bracket screwed in to 2 studs spaced 16" apart. I will definatly buy this again if i need it for another project
