This is a very strange product but seems to do a good job. When I saw this product I expected something more like a roll of sandpaper that I could use to clean copper and other pipe before sweating. What arrived looked like a durable roll of screening. It does clean pipes well but should be used for rough sanding. Think of it as 60-100 grit sandpaper. You may want to finish copper pipe off with some sandpaper before sweating the pipes.

I perform a lot of pipe soldering - this tape is long and easy to wrap around the ends of copper pipes to clean them up (new pipes without oxidation OR old oxidized pipes after I used the wire brush on them). It also makes quick work on cleaning up a just soldered pipe to clean any burnt flux away and so forth. The tape is also handy for smoothing deformed ends of PVC or ABS plastic pipe that seems to have a fitting issue and quickly cleans off burrs and such.

Works well on metal or plastic pipe to remove dirt and corrosion before sweating or gluing. Since it is water proof I also used it on my white corian sink. It works well to remove stains and discolorations. It is easy to use. Just dispense the length you need and tear it off of the roll. The product comes on a 10 yard roll so it will last a long time.

So they ask would you recommend the Oatey abrasive cloth. My answer was yes. Truthfully I don't know . My problem is the description as abrasive cloth. When I think abrasive cloth I think Emery cloth. Well this not Emery cloth maybe that's my bad. The product itself is mesh. I am a mechanic by trade and use Emery cloth to polish metal from time to time and I could not recommend this product for that. But for the intended purpose of cleaning pipes to prep for joining the product works well. The product is double sided and will definitely last longer than Emery cloth .The box also works as a dispenser. So if you do alot of pipe fittings this may be what is right for you. If you are metal polishing I honestly would look elsewhere.

When I’m turning a project on my wood lathe this is the ideal sand “paper” to use. A. It’s narrow so it can follow the contours of the piece. B. It’s design of abrasive material attached to a cross hatch of plastic threads allows the dust to escape easily C. It’s surprisingly strong when trying to get every bit of use out of a strip of it. D. The roll is long enough that for the price I feel it’s a bargain E. Most importantly is that it’s 2 sided! No other sand paper, not even emery cloth has that feature!

This Oatey 1-1/2” wide Abrasive Cloth Roll is pliable and just the right size for handling and sanding those smaller more difficult items that regular and flat sand paper just doesn’t cut it with. It works great for any project that entails sanding on rounded surfaces. I have used this many times for cleaning older rusty metal hand tools and punches. Just lock the item you wish to work on in the shop vice, then you’re free to use this abrasive cloth roll like you’re shining shoes and go to work on those old rusty tools or parts. I find from my experience that the abrasive properties of the cloth rolls stay intact longer than with flat sand paper.

I did a side by side comparison between this product and emery cloth. The emery cloth was what I had in my toolbox for plumbing jobs and is 120 grit whereas this product has a bit finer grit at 180. I attempted to determine how this product performed relative to emery cloth by giving each successive 3 twist cleans between pictures. Side by side pictures were taken after 3 twists, 6 twists, and 9 twists. I then wet both products to perform a second 9 twist comparison since wet conditions are always a possibility during pipe prep prior to sweating. I believe emery cloth performed slightly better in dry conditions and this product performed slightly better in wet conditions. I noted that this product tended to leave parallel circumferential lines vs. a more uniform clean with the emery cloth. I may have gotten better results with this product had I held it at more of an angle instead of perpendicular to the axis of the pipe. I believe this product will hold up better under wet conditions since the open grain tends to shed the water better while emery cloth had a tendency to load up with sanded particles.

The Oatey 1-1/2 inch X 30 Ft Abrasive Cloth Roll is a must have for cleaning or polishing tubing, fittings and copper pipe. This can also be used on plastic and other materials. The open mesh is resistant to filling and clogging. It can be used wet or dry. The abrasive roll is made of strong nylon-based fabric with tough aluminum oxide abrasive that is bonded with a water resistant adhesive providing a long lasting cleaning action. I found that as the grit wears with use it can produce a finer grit that can be used for finer polishing. I'm sure you could find lots of uses for this. Just tear off a length as needed for use.

This 30 foot roll of Oatey brand abrasive cloth is a nice item to have around the home. It is 2 sided so the sanding grit will last a while, and the cloth is durable so you can wrap it around many things and pull back and forth to sand. It feels like the sanding screens used on drywall, but is only 1.5 inches wide so it tears in half by hand easily. I like how the box the roll comes in also serves as a dispenser. I recently used it to clean 30 years of oxidation off an old copper pipe (see picture). It takes a while of rubbing and twisting around the pipe, but it gets the job done and leaves a smooth surface ready for solder.

First let me say that I'm not a professional plumber, just a DIY kind of guy that does plumbing every now & then. The last time I bought a roll of abrasive plumbers cloth was about 20 years ago. I saw this stuff & it reminded me of the sandpaper & have used on drywall so I figured it would do a pretty good job in this application. I was pleasantly surprised to see how good a job it actually did, especially where I had to connect my new work to the exist pipes. The bonus is that you can use both sides so maybe it lasts twice as long ??
