can I use this seal a leaky underground drip line?

can I use this seal a leaky underground drip line?
Asked by: sunset007
This is a joint sealant, to prevent leaks in compression (screw on fittings) if you have a leak in the tubing you will need another solution.

Asked by: Sy
This is just like any other pipe thread tape. It's not adhesive and you don't add adhesive to it. Wrap around threads, tightly, clock-wise, maybe 3-5 times (everybody has their opinion on this but don't make it too thick) and screw the connections together. Very simple.

Does this stuff smell like the kind that's in a tub? I have to replace that because it's smelling up my cabinet bad.

Asked by: Mcf
I did not notice any smell. Just seems like a heavier duty version of teflon tape

I received the Hercules Tape Dope while in the middle of plumbing a gas line for a heater in the barn. Being in the middle of the job meant that I could do a side-by-side comparison. Hands down, the Hercules Tape Dope was far superior than the yellow tape I was using for the gas line connections. The most obvious difference was the thickness of this Tape Dope. It was noticeably thicker than the yellow gas tape I had stated with on this job. It took far less wraps to create a non-leaking seal. The next project was placing ends onto an air hose. I had the same results, used less tape and it sealed perfectly. As the final test on the propane gas line, I used soap bubbles to check all of the connections. All were perfect. Final thoughts, there actually is a difference in tape dope. I liked that the Hercules Tape Dope was thicker than others I used and also that it is multi-use. It can be used for air, gas, or water.

Unlike traditional plumber’s tape Tape Dope is much thicker. It does not take multiple twists around the threaded male end of a pipe. With Tape Dope you wrap a single twist and extend the end or overlap by 1/2 inch, stretch, and break the tape. Rated to withstand extreme heat and pressure up to 10,000 per square inch. Each roll has 500 feet of tape which will last through numerous jobs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not For Cast Iron Gas Fittings This item may say it can be used for gas fittings, however will not pass seal test and will degrade over time on cast iron. Use the old standby, plumber's dope.

In the past I have used generic Teflon tape for sealing threaded joints with three full wraps around the male threads before assembly. This tape is listed as a heavy commercial grade and the instructions indicate that it needs 1 full wrap plus 1/2" for smaller pipes and 2 full wraps for 2" and larger pipes. This has been working well without leaks although I'm usually using two full wraps for all pipe sizes. The tape is noticeably thicker than the generic tapes so I'm sure that two wraps puts at least as much tape between the threads as three wraps of the generic tapes. Also, the heavier gauge helps keep it even and smooth when applying it and it doesn't tend the tear and shred like the thinner tapes.

Pipe thread tape is an odd thing to try to review because it boils down to one thing: does it work? The Hercules Tape Dope works and works well. It is slightly thicker than most pipe tape I've handled so it requires less wraps and is a little easier to handle. At 500" it will be quite a while before I need to purchase more. It has a clean break and doesn't shred like many I've used. Hercules Pipe Dope can be used on pipes carrying acids, solvents, alkalis, steam, hot and cold water, lp gas, natural gas, oxygen and almost every chemical. I think this feature is becoming commonplace to most pipe thread available but this is clearly stated on the package leaving little to question. Recommend.

We just went through a cold snap in the South and I had plenty of water pipe repairs to do. This tape came at just the right time. I used it when replacing a galvanized pipe and fittings in the well house. Used it for several threads on PVC and CPVC pipes repairs. I even used it on a hose pipe connection to ensure no drips! What I liked the most about the tape, was it was easy to work with. It seemed a little heavier than the tape I have used previously. It didn't twist on application and had the right amount of stretch to tension. With 500 feet in the roll, I will have tape for quite a few future repairs. A great value at the price.

I just completed adding approximately 80 feet of black pipe air line in my shop. I used the Hercules tape dope at every connection. What I liked is how clean each connection looks. No mess like when pipe joint compound is used. I keep my line pressure at 110 psi and no leaks. This tape dope is thicker than the regular Teflon tape so fewer wraps are required. And if you have used the regular Teflon tape before, you know that the spool doesn’t last. It breaks, or you lose the cover. This is in a nice container protecting the tape for the next use. Well worth it, happy with the performance of the product.
