Product Overview

The Oatey 8 oz. All-Purpose Leak Detector is designed to form large bubbles to indicate even the smallest leaks in many types of piping applications. Detects leaks quickly on all types of tubing, valves, cylinders, pressure tanks or other systems under air, gas or oxygen pressure. Functions in -55°F to 160°F temperature range, making it great for refrigeration lines. Leak detectors are formulated to be used on the specific materials used in plumbing and won't corrode or degrade the pipe if you don't wipe the solution off after checking for leaks. The surfactants and builders in soaps can leave a corrosive residue on the pipe after you're done checking for leaks. This can cause discoloration and in rare occasions small pinhole leaks depending on the temperature and the material being run through the pipes.
  • High-viscosity formula clings to vertical surfaces
  • Designed for use with all types of tubing, valves, cylinders, pressure tanks and other systems under air, gas and oxygen pressure
  • Can be used in a temperature range from 55°F to 160°F
  • Produces large, long-lasting bubbles to indicate leaks
  • Slow evaporation rate provides long inspection times for leak detection
  • Non-toxic

well yes and no YES it can easily pin-point any leak NO because it has corrosive properties i'd recommend the "bubble" solution from dollar tree water+soap for that application in a spray bottle

Can this be used to find a leak in above ground pool?

Asked by Tiff July 3, 2020

Answer

Most likely, No. This is a soapy solution used only to find gaseous leaks, such as compressed air, or flammable gases, or other types of compressed gas. The leak produces bubbles that can be seen.

This was used in a swimming pool full of water is the water now safe to swim in?

This should never have been used in a pool. Drain the pool, scrub it down with ammonia, rinse the pool, and let it refill with rainwater.

Sniffer may take longer if you are trying to find a leak outdoors and it's windy. The liquid will pinpoint the leak indicated by the bubbles.

No. This is not that kind of leak detector. It is a soapy solution intended to detect leaks in pressurized gaseous lines by showing bubbles. If your drain pipe is visibly accessible, you might try using an ultraviolet leak detecting concentrate and an ultraviolet light. A sewer smell can be indicative of an open sewer, that is, a trap that doesn't keep water in it. That is all that keeps sewer gases out of your house. If your leak is so small you cannot SEE water leaking when showers are running, then it doesn't make sense that sewer gas is coming from a leaking pipe. The sewer lines are not under pressure of any kind, and all that keeps gases at bay is a few ounces of water in a sewer trap.

Update to this question about a "mystery" leak. The mystery has been solved. There were no leaks, in the fittings anyway. It was the regulator. Now of course I checked the fittings to the regulator, and even the output with the screw backed all the way out. But the leak was internal. I have had internal leaks before in regulators and they were always audible. This one was too small to be audible, and hardly noticeable on the supply gauge, but enough to draw down in about 45 minutes. Replaced the regulator, problem solved. Pressure gauge has not budged a hair. It's always the last thing you think to check.

Does this work on swimming pools

No. Only for gases, not liquids.

How do you use it

Nearly everyone else that asked questions about this leak detector needs to read this. This leak detector is a soapy solution (you could make your own just as well) that is ONLY intended to detect GASEOUS leaks such as compressed fuel gas (not gasoline) line/connections, or compressed air connections or other compressed gas systems. It will NOT detect leaks in any kind of liquid systems such as swimming pools or car radiators. OATEY,/HOME DEPOT please note that your title is entirely misleading and that is why you are getting all these questions. It is NOT an All-Purpose leak detector. It is only for compressed gas.

Great Basic Checkerq
Had to replace my water heater and wanted to make sure there was no leaks. Bubble test was as simple as it gets. It was effective, but I though it would be bubblier.

No LEAKS!
I have used this leak detector for the past 3 years and have been very pleased with it. It's easy to apply since it has the brush inside of it and it's ready to use. I do not have anything to dislike about this product. It worked well when I installed my new gas range. This product did meet my expectations. Please hit the thumbs up if this was helpful.

Works properly
Recently used when hooking up gas to water heater. The only issue I had with this product was getting bubbles when applying it to connections(picture), but that happens with any blue leak solution I have used. Immediate leak detection so a couple applications and staring at pipe for a while to make sure no new bubbles formed worked for me.

It works but.............. it does produce some bubbles when air is leaking, but the bubbles are small and do not last very long, so it is hard to tell if you have a leak which it the whole point of using it. I compared it to a couple of ounces of dish soap in a quart of water and that was much better for finding leaks (as can be seen in the pictures) one of the good points of this leak detector vs water and soap is that it can be used down to -55 degrees. It comes with a decent applicator in the bottle which is good, It can also be used in a spray bottle for easier application. If it made more or better bubbles I would have given it a 5 star but they are just to small and short lived to be much use.

Thank you for the review. Please keep in mind that dish soap has corrosive properties to certain pipe materials, so it shouldn't be used as a leak detector. Sorry that you had issues with this product, please always feel free to reach out to our customer service team,we're always here to help! 800-321-9532
