Product Details
Oatey's Air Admittance Valve is a 1-way valve designed to allow air to enter the plumbing drainage system when negative pressure develops in the piping system. The device will close by gravity and seal the vent terminal under zero differential pressure (no flow conditions) and under positive internal pressures. Q:I am moving the kitchen sink about 8? away from the former location and adding a dishwasher. Will a AAV work as a substitute for a dishwasher air gap device? Also can I mount the AAV over to the side of the P trap line with a T and a 90 degree elbow?

Answer This Question
A: The AAV is just a substitute for a sewer vent.  Where I live code doesn’t require an air gap for the dishwasher because it drains into a system that is already has a vent.  As far as T’ing off the P-trap, you really can’t because the AAV plumbs into schedule 40 pipe and your P-trap and such under the sink are just some thinned walls junk. But the AAV has to be after the P-trap to work and vent properly.  I don’t know if this answers your question but I hope it helps.

A:Â No an AAV is not a air gap device. Also our AAV's need to come vertical off of the horizontal pipe. An AAV is not a self cleaning device and debris could potentially collect in the horizontal section between the tee and 90.

Q:My toilet dies not have a air vent to flush fully/properly. I disconnected the sink drain after the trap and then it flushed perfect. Can I install this in that sink drain line and my toilet will flush correctly?

Answer This Question
A:Â Depending on how the system is piped will determine if an AAV would work or not. It can be used for that application though.

Excellent solution for an unvented sink
My kitchen sink was unvented when I bought this house so was making a gurgle sound that was really irritating me. It looked like somebody capped off the vent under the sink years ago and now it looks like you would almost need a blow torch to get it off. Rather than spending hundreds on a plumber to come out I decided to put this AAV in myself.
I looked up YouTube on these devices and seemed like a lot of people had confidence in Oatey. This worked perfect for my needs and my sink now no longer has that annoying gurgle sound. I liked that it even provided the adapter which I did not realize until I was in the store. I thought I would have to buy an adapter separately.
I know that these devices are not up to code for Illinois (and a lot of other states), but in reality these are a very easy solution to get your sink vented without needing to pay a big plumber bill. And this is coming from a guy that works on a computer all day and has limited to DIY skills.

It seems a lot of people have had good luck with this product, but I didn't . I bought it because we bought a deeper sink in our 18 year old house so I had to lower the plumbing which meant cutting the existing pvc and bypassing it so I also bypassed the vent so the sink would gurgle when the upstairs washing machine went through the rinse cycle. I bought the vent and installed it per instructions but that didn't help. I was going to buy another vent and install it in the horizontal pvc pipe in the basement, but instead, just put a t back into the old pipe that I originally cut so I could utilize the existing vent. Hindsight is 20/20, but I should have done that first.

Need a quick secondary vent for your waste line, Oatey has what you are looking for in a Air Admittance Valve

Oatey 1-1/2 in. PVC 6 DFU Air Admittance Valve
I moved the sink in our kitchen to another wall and needed to have a vent pipe but didn't want to cut a hole through the roof and wall. The best way was to vent the line by using an Air Admittance Valve.
All I had to do was, cut the drain pipe between the P-trap and the wall, install a TEE and run the Air Admittance Valve out the top.
Now what should you look for in a good Air Admittance Valve:
(1) It needs to allow air to enter the plumbing drainage system when water flows down the pipe and must close and seal the vent when there is no flow conditions.
(2) The top should screw off for easy replacement or to allow easy access when cleaning out a clogged pipe. See photo
IMPORTANT FACTS
For use as a secondary vent
Complies to ASSE standard 1050 and 1051
1-size approved to handle up to 2 in. vent pipe

This Oatey Sure-Vent PVC Air Admittance valve is handy for when you don’t want to spend the time and money running a vent all the way through the roof. What this valve is designed to do is to allow fresh air as the fixture drains. After draining, the valve seals up to prevent foul air from exiting the drain pipes. Great for situations where your adding a drain and need venting for it. This valve is designed to be used as a secondary vent. You still should have a traditional primary vent. Great for bathroom additions, wet bars, island sinks, tubs, toilet, just be sure to follow the instructions to get an idea where to install this valve. This product is something I really like, and if your rehabbing a home, using these is a nice way of taking out the clutter of rooftop vents sticking out of your home, and is one less vantage point on the roof where leakage can occur by using this product. This valve comes with an adapter to use solvent welding or traditional pipe threading.

Great little AAV. Trouble for me is I thought this would fix my issue but I had other problems with my plumbing. That's not the fault of this valve though.
As others have noted, you should mount this in a very upright position. A degree or two off is OK, but just eyeball it as good as you can. For installation I purchased a special T to go along with. What I didn't realize is the T, while it obviously had 3 openings didn't have three seals and three nuts. So I had to make a special trip back to Home Depot just to get the last seal. So while you are there, spend the extra dollar (or whatever it is) and buy the extra seal and plastic nut... You can see it in the picture below.
There's nothing tricky about the install. I have 1 and 1/2 inch pipes which are obviously not regular PVC pipe size. But they are the normal ones for under the sink. The AAV slips over that and just locked on with the nut. I plugged one end of the T, put the AAV on it and tried to blow/suck are through the T from the remaining opening and it worked great.
I bought that T because it had the one long side. You are supposed to have the AAV at least 4" above the drain line. So that T made it possible without having to buy and assemble other parts.
Good luck!
