Deck Stain Guide How Much Needed

How much deck stain is needed

The size of your project will determine how much stain you need. Remember, solid stain colors require two coats.

Deck Cleaning and Sweeping

Clean your deck

Sweep debris from deck, then use Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner to wash away dirt and stains caused by mildew.

Prepping Deck Exterior For Stain

Prep your deck

Tape off the surfaces you don't want stained. Avoid staining wood in direct sunlight to avoid uneven drying.

Staining Deck with Brush

Stain application

For even coverage, apply the stain to one board at a time. For best results, backbrush into the wood surface.

Clear Stain

Clear Stain

Clear finish allows your wood to weather and gray naturally. Least Protection, Most Wood Grain.

Transparent Deck Stain Color

Slight hint of stain color that highlights the wood grain. Less protection, More Wood Grain.

Semi-Transparent Deck Stain Color

Rich stain color that allows wood grain and texture to show. More Protection, Less Wood Grain.

Semi-Solid Deck Stain Color

Same rich color as semi-transparent, but hides more wood grain. More Protection, Least Wood Grain.

Polyurethane Can Quart

Fully opaque color overs the wood grain and accentuates the texture. Most Protection, No Wood Grain.

A Comprehensive Review
After receiving some outrageous quotes and a very stretched contractor base, I decided to do the whole thing myself - approx 1400 sqft of 20-year old occasionally-watersealed deck. - Did the project over the course of a month (April/May) around perfect weather conditions. - Prep was Powerwashed, Stripped, Powerwashed, Cleaned, Powerwashed, and actually hit with a wire brush then vacuumed. - Painted the entire deck with a 4" brush then topped with a coarse roller. Painted all vertical services (and some rough spots) with a brush. It was absolutely backbreaking work. It came out absolutely beautiful..... and after a full Summer it still looks brand-new. Most importantly - and TBD - I hope that it lasts the 10 years advertised. Feel free to ask any questions....

          Very Disappointed
I personally spoke with the local PPG Rep and followed his advice strictly! Built a brand new deck, let it weather for one year, cleaned the deck with Olympic Deck Cleaner, bought a pole sander and sanded the entire (16'x40') deck by hand, oh...and purchased a wood moisture meter to be sure the moisture content was below 10%. Applied two coats - 6 hrs apart and the very next year, the stain started to peel off. I spend a lot of time and money and this product produced very poor results.

The 10 Year Warranty is USELESS
Just applied to a very large 1200 sq ft deck at the end of last summer. We followed the directions meticulously. We allowed the news deck to cure for a year. We cleaned the wood. Allowed it to dry. Waited for the perfect weather conditions to apply. Applied two coats. Summer hasn’t even started yet and the stain is so peeled and scuffed they the deck is embarrassing. the thought of trying to remove and replace all of this is so incredibly disappointing and anxiety producing. The warranty explicitly excludes labor associated with the removal application, which is is absurd. This Olympic stain ruined our brand new deck :(

              Peeling Off Deck
Deck was Professionally Sanded In September, 2017 at a cost of $800 down to the bare wood. Following instructions from Lowe's Paint Department, I was advised that Olympic Maximum Stain Sealant with 10 Yr Protection, Only one coat would be needed and could be applied to the deck, which I did in October, 2017. Please note it was completely dry by the time the stain was applied. As you can see from the attached pictures, the deck stain is already peeling in numerous spots. The furniture has not even been put on the deck since it was stained. There are additional spots on the railing as well where the stain is leaching thru.

Hi there, Sorry that your deck is peeling. The key to successful staining is all about preparing and making sure your wooden surface is ready to stain. After it was sanded down, did you clean your deck prior to adding stain? We want to gather more details about your staining project so we can figure out why your stain is peeling, and find you a solution. We can be reached at 1-800-426-6306 between 8am-5pm EST.
My husband sanded and cleaned deck with a cleaner to prep for paint as was suggested by the store associate Deck was painted last spring and has not held up - there are parts of the deck that are peeling away. There is no way it will last 10 years

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Went on great, and sealed older deck great. Looks great. Love the color. Seems to repel water. Very happy with it.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've used only Olympic semi transparent stain on my 27 year old deck and got relatively good results. 3 years ago I belt sanded and power washed the deck before resealing with 8-year Maximum. It was completely dry and appeared to take the stain like previous applications. After only one year, the stain left the surface and the deck turned bear and 30% gray. The wood is no longer water resistant and looks horrible. I don't know where to go from here but I did not want to start over this soon.
