I need some tips on the best places to plant the Cardinal Flower Plant, I planted mine the next day after I received it and it is not looking very good. I do not have a green thumb. It is also getting some white kind of spots on part of it, Any suggestions?
Asked by: Jay
They will do well in dappled shade to part sun. Mine get about 5 hours of direct sun (10am-3pm) and they're happy. But I've also seen them do well in full shade and full sun. Here's the trick: they need to stay moist in the summer (even soggy is ok), but on the dry side in winter. Don't mulch over them or the crown will rot. I can't speak to the white spots...maybe they went from no sun to full sun too suddenly? They don't normally bloom until late summer, so there's plenty of time for it to recover. As long as it's pushing out new leaves and starting to get a flower stalk, it should be ok.

Is there more than one flower stalk included? Are there flowers on it when it ships?

I'm thinking of buying this as a gift for someone. I wish Home Depot would show pictures of the item as it looks when shipped. Does it have flowers on it when it ships? Does it look nice when received? Or is it small and in a dormant state and look like a dollar store plant? How many flower stalks come in the 1 gallon pot? Is the pot gift-worthy? Thanks!
Asked by: SMSS
Hello, thank you for your question. The Cardinal Flower is currently emerging from dormancy, is about 4" in height, and does not have a central stalk but rather a clump of foliage. There is no blooms at this time because (1) it is emerging from dormancy, and (2) it blooms in late summer. It is not a "pot with soil" but rather a smaller-sized potted plant. Because the plant will grow as the year progresses, with each passing day the plant gets larger. It is similar to the size & quality of the potted plants in the Home Depot garden center itself. The container is the traditional black nursery pot so depending on the shopper's perspective, it may or may not be "gift worthy".

Customer Reviews

1 gal. Cardinal Flower Plant is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far it's doing well So far it's doing well out here in Murrieta, California (Zone 10) . Missed the blooming season as it was shipped as a young plant. Have to wait till Summer 2018 for those flowers, if it survives that long lol. But it seems to be doing well in a 5 gallon pot with very wet soil and mostly shaded area on balcony. Purchased this because Hummingbirds love it, and we have several feeders with 8-10 birds on average visiting our small balcony.:-) Hope this helps

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect It arrived in good shape and is planted and doing well. The cardinal plant is a beautiful perineal. The deer don't eat it. . I was a bit sceptical about ordering plants via mail but could not find this wonderful cardinal plant locally. So took a leap and ordered on Home Depot. It was great. They kept me updated on delivery.
