A sport of Hosta 'Francee' with the same clumping form and sporty, dark green leaves but with wider, irregular margins. Tall, lavender flower spikes bloom in mid-summer about the bold foliage. The 18 in. tall x 24 in. wide plant is long-lived, reliable and easy to grow. For best foliage color, grow in moist, well drained, organically rich soil in partial to full shade; preferably with morning sun. The dramatic foliage fit's into the landscape well and can be used as a specimen by itself, to provide contrast within a group of other hosta, as a foundation plant, in the bed, or as an edging, or as an understory plant beneath large trees.

Hi Skye, the 'Patriot can be planted anytime the ground is not frozen. This perennial is dormant during the winter months and autumn is a terrific time to plant.

After the flower has fallen off do you cut the flower stem

Asked by Pat August 10, 2018

Answer

Yes, you should cut flower spikes off at their base when blooming is over.

Will this thrive in full sun?

Asked by Karen June 23, 2018
1
Answer

I’ve planted them in both full sun and partial, and they seem to do well in both settings. I’m in plant zone 7A and they get water from either rain or sprinklers. Also, after about 3 seasons they fill out to being much fuller. I’ve some hostas that are 20 years old so next year instead of purchasing more for other areas, I’ll be dividing them just as shoots begin to show in the Spring and replanting.

When planting Hosta what is the spacing that should be observed between plants

Since the mature width is up to 24 inches, you would want to plant them at least this far apart.

Do rabbits and deer eat hostas?

Asked by ted May 17, 2018

Answer

Hi Ted, yes, sometimes deer (and rabbits, too) will eat the Hosta. It just depends on their browsing preference in your particular neighborhood.

My Hosts plant is turning yellow in the center and the center leaves are dying. We have had a lot of rain and frost.

Asked by Sherry May 18, 2017

Answer

Hello, thank you for your question. Hosta are extremely susceptible to excessive rainfall. Stunted slow growth with yellowing leaves is a symptom of overwatering, as the wet conditions cause nitrogen to leach out of the soil, starving the plant of its nutrients. If the new growth is dying at the same rate of the old leaves, this is a sure sign of overwatering. To combat the effects of too much moisture, try fertilizing with a slow release fertilizer. Regarding frost: Frost damage is usually seen on the leaf edges first; before the centers are affected. In this case, the leaves can just simply be cut off and new foliage will emerge.
