Product Overview

  • Fragrant, Pink Tinted White Flowers in Spring
  • Reddish Purple Foliage
  • Easy to Grow in Average Soil and a Sunny Site
One of the hardiest purple-leafed plants, this erect, deciduous shrub has foliage that is intensely reddish-purple, which lasts until late fall. Single, pinkish, fragrant blooms are produced in spring after the leaves develop, giving contrast to the dark foliage. Small black inedible fruits follow the flowers. Plant in full sun in any well drained, average soil. Prune annually to shape and to maintain a nice, neat appearance.
  • Beautiful accent plant with deep reddish purple leaves all summer
  • Dramatic foliage color
  • Year-round interest with tiny spring flowers, summer foliage color, and black inedible fruits in fall
  • Showy spring flowers
  • 2 gal. ships in pot unless state or federal regulations require otherwise
  • We're sorry, but due to state regulations, this plant cannot be shipped to Arizona, California, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Oregon, South Carolina, Vermont or Washington
  • This plant ships as a bare root plant with no soil and no pot when shipped to Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Utah
  • When shipped as a bare root plant, the Shake&Shipsystem will be used to remove soil from the roots, thus increasing the root tip surface area, which in turn, greatly enhances the ability of the plant to rapidly establish itself in the new environment
  • Performs best in plant growing zones 4 to 7, when grown in other Zones, special care requirements will be required
  • To accommodate mature size or when planting in groups, space 6 ft. away from other plants or structures
  • May ship in a dormant state, with bare branches and no leaves, especially in early spring when plant has been pruned back to promote lateral branching

Questions & Answers

how do i treat Japanese Beetle damage?

Asked by: Milly
Hello, Japanese Beetles are definitely hard to control. Once the plant's leaves have been damaged, there is no cure until the foliage dies back and drops off in autumn. Next spring, there will be a flush of new leaves.

We have several Western Sand Cheery shrubs that have grown over 14 feet high.

On one of the branches there is a web containing a host of worm like creatures. Can you identify this phenomena for me. I have attached a picture. What can I do about it?
Asked by: Dale
Thank you for your inquiry. The photo did not upload well and unfortunately we are not able to assist with this issue. In most areas of the country, there are Master Gardeners for each county. A quick online search for Master Gardeners followed by your state will bring up a location close to you. They offer free help to homeowners with gardening concerns such as yours and are familiar with offering solutions to gardening issues within your local area.

2 gal. Purpleleaf Sand Cherry Shrub is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Full of color Great looking plant that came back to life this spring with tons of flower blossoms.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from These plants arrived dead. I trusted the two good reviews and I have tried ordering these plants twice. The first time I received a dead shipment, of one plant, instead of the multiple plants that I paid for. I thought that the mail was to blame, so I re-ordered the plants. The next order arrived dead, as well. I don't think that these plants died in the mail. I think that the nursery sent dead plants. Buyer beware. The nursery sends fewer plants than you order, and they are DOA.
