Will this Orbit Clear Comfort Programmable Thermostat work on Evaporative Coolers?

Power from wire?

Asked by Sam April 4, 2020

Answer

It powers with wire and NOT with your standard 14-2 or 12-2 outlet wiring. You'll need 18 gauge with at least four wires from the thermostat to the forced air unit to provide power, heating and cooling signals. Your FAU specs will tell you which wires are for power, heating control and cooling control and those will be run through the wall to the thermostat. The thermostat specs will also let you know which wire goes to which connection on the thermostat. And remember, you also need 18 gauge or 16 gauge wire from your forced air unit to your outside compressor unit which controls the relays (switches) that tell your 240 wiring connected to your compressor unit to power up the a/c compressor.

Just a guess, but the batteries should last a year.

Can it be combined with an existing hydrostat?

Asked by Frits1947 October 25, 2019

Answer

I would control just the hydronic zone valves with this unit. The hydrostats purpose is for detecting the presence of water, as from overflow or leakage and to control the temperature of the water within the boiler.

I really like how it performs and looks. if I had more time to shop, I would have probably have invested in a more modern thermostat. I really like how I only had to program it once and it's been great.

Nice looking, easy to install and easy to use thermostat. The up and down temperature buttons feel a bit flimsy and the wire connection block screws are hard to reach and feel also flimsy. Overall is a good thermostat for the money. Highly recommended.

CLEAR COMFORT PRO THERMOSTAT by Orbit This is a very good thermostat for the price point. Cost is inexpensive Easy to install for the typical DIY'er Nice looking Large easy-to-read display Sufficient back light display Programming / Scheduling is easy to adjust for sleeping, getting ready in the morning, leaving, and returning home. If you want to have it set permanently at a specific temperature, just press the Hold button. Temporary temp setting is available, as you adjust to desired temp and walk away. Temporary sets temp for about 2 hours. There is nothing I would change about this unit.

The things I like the most about this thermostat are: • the sleek look and design • easy to read display • lights up with a touch You’d think the light up function would be a “gimme” on all thermostats but the one I replaced had a separate button you had to press to get it to light up. I also think this is the best looking thermostat at this price point. The installation was not too difficult, but luckily my wiring was the more common and the system defaults (i.e. fossil fuels) all worked for my installation. It did take a good hour but a chunk of that is learning how to program it for both COLD and again for HEAT. Once I learned how to use the COPY function, I created a schedule for Monday, then copied it to all days then tweaked Saturday and Sunday to my liking. You’ll also need a very small Phillips head when attaching the wires. Two things I did not like: • It’s a pain to get out of the package. My knife scratched the side of the thermostat. • When it comes time to change the battery, I don’t like how you pull on the top to pry/unsnap it from the bottom. My old unit had a simple tab on the bottom that you could push in and then easily lift off the top. There was no fear of pulling the thermostat from the wall.

Orbit, Clear Comfort Pro Thermostat. Easy Installation, very nice design and easy to see in the dark with the soft light that comes on with a simple touch. You have to program the unit for each day but, once that's done you can enjoy the coolness. It was a simple installation really, I thought since this being my first time changing a thermostat it was going to be one of those technical things that I would have to look up, but No It was really easy to do. The instructions are simple to follow including illustrations.

I you have a hard time seeing the numbers on your thermostat then this is a excellent choice with a nice blue back lighted LED screen. I have two zones in my home with forced hot water and this is my second Orbit thermostat so I can say with confidence that this is a great product that has been working perfectly for three years. This has a seven day schedule that you can tailor four times a day when your home or away. The installation was simple but you need to buy 3 AAA batteries. The programs will be stored in memory when you change the batteries which I do once a year when winter arrives.

This was so easy to install! Took about and hour from getting the tools to being ready to program. The last one I installed to a heat pump/a/c unit I needed assistance wiring it up (not this brand). It's a small unit, a bit larger than a deck of cards yet the screen is easy to see. Blue back lighting and easy to read LCD display. The controls for a/c-heat and fan are on the side and large enough to easily switch to the desired function. There are several detailed instructions for different a/c-heat pump-furnace applications. Each had a diagram of the wiring so it's simple to match up most modern thermostats. The programming of run times can seem a bit confusing but it's more simple than it seems. It has factory preset run times/temperatures so if you're sensitive to cooler or warmer temps you'll want to make sure to program it. You'll need 3-AAA batteries to get the display functioning and program this.

If you currently have a single stage heating system and a standard thermostat, and would like to ...
If you currently have a single stage heating system and a standard thermostat, and would like to upgrade to a 7 day programable model, this model is stylish and is easy to install. I have owned two of these as I have a house with two separate zones. 1 upper and one lower levels. I like to upgrade the thermostats for better economy as I only use the upstairs during the weekends and I cut down on heating and cooling during the weekend while I'm at work. Just remember to shut off the power to the furnace before switching out the units. I forgot once and had to replace the fuse on the furnace circuit board. Only takes about 15 minutes to change out, but then another 15 minutes to set up the programming the way I like it. This model does not auto change from heat to cooling, you must slide the button to the correct position in the spring and fall, and it has a slider to turn on the fan if you want to circulate the air. Changing the temperature is a snap with the up and down arrow buttons and you can override the schedule with the hold button. Good value for the price.
