Good and bad; should be available in 12' or 16' lengths but isn't
The good: Ambrosia maple is gorgeous, in my opinion. There is this process where a certain beetle infects a maple tree, bringing with it a certain fungus. The result is this beautifully figured maple called ambrosia maple. It has tremendous variation in color and grain. There are streaks of grey, greyish brown, reddish browns, and light wood. I think it's beautiful; especially with an oil finish, which really makes these features pop. Wood grading systems consider the ambrosia process a flaw in the wood. Therefore, it is often found at reasonably low prices. The bad: Because of the tremendous variation in color and texture, it is nearly impossible to make a scarf joint look good, because you can't match the two sides. The joint stands out. This would be acceptable, except that this product isn't available in lengths greater than 8 feet. I called the manufacturer directly. So, ugly scarf joints will be an absolute requirement in all but the very smallest of rooms.
