Acephate is a systemic insect control that kills by contact meaning the insect must come in contact with the product It affects the insect nervous system. Ortho Orthene Fireant Killer1 can be used around flowers, trees and shrubs. The product can be used around and up to the base of the plant, but is not registered for use on plants and should not touch the foliage of plants. If the product is accidentally applied to plants, wash them off with water.
When used according to label instructions, Ortho Orthene Fire Ant Killer1 poses no unreasonable health risks. At a minimum do not allow pets such as cats and dogs and other non-grazing pets into treated area until dust from applying has settled. For best results keep pets such as cats and dogs and other non-grazing pets out of application area for up to 24 hours so that the mound is not disturbed. This allows the ants to track the powder into the mound to effectively kill the ants in the mound, including the queen.
