Is black spot a fungus

Asked by: Kenny
Kenny, Black Spot on roses is caused by the fungus Diplocarpion rosea. It appears in spring and summer months during time of high humidity and or rain. It spreads from plant to plant by splashing of rainwater. Black Spot looks like circular black spots with fringed margins that appear on the upper leaf surface in the spring. Area around the spots may turn yellow or the entire leave may turn yellow and drop prematurely. Black spots can expand to ¾ and inch and merge together. To control: Keep leaves dry by planting in sunny location to encourage leaves drying after a rain. Promote air movement by avoiding planting in location with dense surround foliage. Do not water above ground in late afternoon evening (ground irrigation is okay because leaves do not get wet.) Preventative fungicide application (check recommendation charts) – These do not cure infected leaves but prevent the spread of Black Spot. Remove infected leaves carefully to avoid spread of disease.

Customer Reviews

Rose and Flower 32 oz. Insect and Disease Control Concentrate is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use After being inundated by rains early this year my rose bushes had a white mildew on the lower leaves. I mixed Rose and flower disease control in my Ortho hose end sprayer and covered the plant with this product. I needed to reapply after one week after the first application but all the powdery mildew is gone. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Use This spring was the first time I used any product to prevent disease on my Knock Out Roses. The Roses look great with no evidence of any disease, no black spots and no white powdery looking leaves despite a very rainy season. I’m very pleased. Mixing and application were very easy. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ease of application. We didn’t have a bad problem so this was used more as a preventative measure. I know that you can rely on a Scott’s product to deliver quality results. You can trust their brand name to perform as advertised. Buy what you know will work from a company you trust. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product for roses and flowers Good product to protect your roses and flowers. Keep the bugs and other pests away so flowers can bloom as wanted. Like to make sure the flowers are protected and this product does the job. Ortho is a product you can depend on working as stated. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roses Look Terrific and leaves look healthy Sprayed on all my rose bushes and the leaves stayed green and health. I have notice the leaves not turning brown this year. They are flowering very good this year since spraying. I would give this product 5 stars and it is very easy to use. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roses vs Bugs I have a real problem with Japanese Beetles attaching them leaves which in turn means I only get a brief life span for the plant. This seems to help the problem but it does not totally eliminate it. The strong winds cause it to dissipate [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Must be working! I always have trouble with roses. After trying this, so far so good. I just wish it was also effective on insect pests like aphids and white flies. I have just added two more rose plants and will continue to use the disease Control. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from so far so good I applied this early in the month of May, and again as directed. I still get some round holes (aphids??) chewed in the leaves, but not nearly as many as previous years. I'll keep on using it until the end of the summer and into fall.
