Q:Will this light feel a room. Or is it really made to illuminate a specific area for reading, computer work, sewing, etc?

A:  Thanks for your inquiry. Please feel free to visit Ottlite's website via: www.ottlite.com and under Floor Lamp category click onto Ottlite's Extended Reach Floor lamp (model #823WG4-FFP), once directed to that specific lamp page see figure #1 in the instructions which list the gray cone of area the lamp head is able to be moved in without causing damage to the lamp. While the lamp could light up a room it would depend on the distance from the lamp + the size of the room. Hope this helps.
