Q:How much weight can it hold? Thinking to use it to support a Little Free Library so it will definitely need to hold some weight
by|May 9, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A: Janine, The use for a “free library” for the mailbox post is interesting but is definitely considered a custom application of the product. It has not been tested for this type of use. The only way to guarantee that it can handle excessive weight is by adding additional supports tailored to the custom use.

Q:Can it be painted?
by|Apr 3, 2023

Answer This Question
A: Paint, Yes this mailbox post can be painted or stained to suit your preference. Make sure the wood is dry before application. (Pour some water over the surface. Remember, if it beads, wait; if it is quickly absorbed into the wood, it's ready.)

Q:How deep should the hole be dug for the post for the 6ft Pressure-Treated Post

Answer This Question
A: USPS.com states the post should be at a height of 41”-45” out of the ground. We consulted their website and our local municipality guidelines. We needed the distance from the edge of the road also, so a state plow (to prevent it from being hit by a plow wing)

A: Edward, Use a post hole digger to dig a hole for your post at this spot. Dig deep enough that the height of your mailbox above the ground is around 42 inches. Do not dig deeper than 24 inches.

It was disappointing that HD only had two of these...
It was disappointing that HD only had two of these in stock at the Rutland store and both had plenty of defects. It's surprising that whoever constructed these could use lumber with so many defects and then HD quality control would put them up for sale. It's only a mailbox post, but one still expects better from HD.

A good, sturdy mailbox post replacing one that was damaged by a vehicle. You will have to look for one that is good (no splits, checks or knots that may cause problems) and you should check the nails holding the pieces together. I added GRK screws to make sure the Pressure Treated Gothic-top Mailbox Post was not coming apart any time soon.

We like the look of this post, as it's a little different than just a 4X3. The post is good and lasts quite a long time. The one we replaced was 14 years old, so we don't expect to have to replace this one any time soon. It's a little pricey compared to others but when you divide that by 14 years, it's really not bad!

Does not meet postal code requirements
The top flat that would be the bottom of the mailbox is 56" from the bottom. After burying the post 24" postal code states it has to be 41" - 45". Put the two together it is 65" at the minimum. The posts are made 9" below the minimum specs!
