Questions & Answers

is this product flammable if put on or next to out dated wiring in old buildings

is this product flammable if put on or next to out dated wiring in old buildings
Asked by: doda
The fiberglass insulation is not flammable. Note the insulation itself cannot burn. But as you mentioned old wiring in old buildings, this insulation, or any insulation, will reduce heat flow in or out of a building. If the wires are getting warm under use due to small sizes used many years ago, or increased power requirements of whatever is plugged in, the insulation will keep that heat energy around the wires. Without insulation the wires can be cooled by the surrounding air. It is possible that with insulation the wires can get quite hot, perhaps to the point of creating a fire hazard. You may want to check the sizes of the wires and the size of fuses or circuit breakers they are connected to against the current building code requirements for your area. If they are already big enough, then it should be no problem.

Since the product R-Value is measured by height where can I find Insulation Depth Markers?

I cannot find these on the Home Depot website. They seem critical for applying the product correctly.
Asked by: Todd
They are free at the Home Depot where you pick up the AttiCat insulation. I got a dozen of them and just stapled mine on the roofing framework and all around the attic and then left them.

will the machine that blows the insulation in also suck out the insulation?

Yes. All fans that blow on one side, will suck in on the other side.

This is a great way to insulate attic space, simple a little messy but not too itchy. Make sure you check the blower, hoses/clamps and other equipment before taking it. Although home depot tries, not all people return the equipment in good order. Also some home depots do not have remotes on their hoses, these make life much easier for the person blowing it to control the fill. Over all this is a great system that we have used many times, add in the free rental for 24 hours with the purchase of 10 bales, you have success at your fingertips.

I'll get to that in a second, but first the product seems to be very good, however the delivery system is lacking. When you pick up the blower machine, make sure all the parts are there (2-50' hoses, hose coupler, hose-to-machine coupler nut+sleeve+sleeve retainer ring, and hose-to-sleeve clamp). They no longer supply a remote control with these units (but you can make your own). Mine was missing all these items except the hoses and I was told to just use duct tape - wrong, buck-o. The manager finally rounded up some replacement parts and I Jerry-rigged the rest. I spent the first 2 hours finding and fixing the holes in the hoses (12 total) that spewed air (lost pressure) and product (into non-attic spaces). I could have dragged the blower up to the second floor of our house and placed it under the attic access and used 1 fifty-foot hose, however I didn't want to have the mess in our bedroom. Not to mention the strain on my "hyenna" getting it upstairs. So we stuck the blower in the driveway near a first floor window and used the manager supplied 3" PVC as a coupling to get a reasonably good seal with 5 pounds of duct tape for the 2 fifty-foot hoses. Also, note that these machines will always leak near the seam where the top and bottom come together. Duct tape seems to be the only answer. NOW - on to the REMOTE (my wife's idea!!!) . I don't know why they got rid of these, other than people didn't return them and they didn't work very well. Cellphones, walkie-talkies, whistles, and yells don't cut it - you want to stop the blower right away! All you need is 2 extensions cords. In my case, I ran a 100' orange cord from the machine to the end of hose. The other reviewers suggestions to attach a 3" x 3' PVC pipe "nozzle" to the end of the hose is a MUST. This acts as a barrel to direct the spray. Attach the end of the extension cord to the "nozzle". I then attached a second 50' green extension cord to the nozzle and ran it back along the hose to an outlet near the attic access. (SEE PICTURES). Duct tape the cords to the hoses at about 5'-6' intervals to keep things untangled and neat. When you want to blow, connect the 2 extension cords together at the nozzle. Your "loader" will see the white power light come on and they will need to hit the "start" button (the machine doesn't start automatically with the power restored). The loader can continue their job until you disconnect the extension cords and stop the blower. One last note - use 16 ga. or better extension cords to eliminate excess voltage drop. And that's it!!! I hope this helps and happy blowing.

HD delivery guys stacked the bags neatly in a pile in my garage. Rented the machine a week later and hauled it home in the back of our 2007 Highlander. Pre-cut 10 bags at a time and staged them next to the machine, which was manned by fiancee with 2-way radio. I duct taped a broomstick to end of hose as others suggested, donned my Tyvek coveralls and respirator, and blew my puffy pink load all over the attic. With the broomstick, I never had to get within 15 feet of the corners, and spraying the stuff against the rafters and watching it fall like snow was quite Zen. I ran out of space to put the insulation after 25 bags, which amounted to about R-49 all around. After 3 hours of spraying insulation, and an hour of trying to stuff the 100 foot hose back into the trash can it came in, I returned the machine and 5 bags to HD for a refund. Overall cost was about $800, compared with $3500 for a contractor to do the same work, so it was well worth the time and effort.

As you can see in most of the reviews, the remote would be a great feature, if it worked. I attempted to rent a blower with the remote from my local HD and asked them to check the remote for working before I took it. Naturally, it didn't. I went to the next nearest HD and they had an Atticat with a new hose and remote. We checked that the remote worked by plugging in the blower and turning it on and off with the remote while standing next to the machine. (big mistake). After getting home and setting everything up to start "shooting", I noticed if the remote was more than 15 feet away from the machine, it wouldn't work! Two features need to added to this system to make it a 5 star system. 1. The remote should be "hardwired" to the blower so it works. 2. Added to the remote, there should be a speed control where you could turn down the force of the air coming out of the hose. As many others have stated, when you get to a corner or close to any walled area, the insulation blows back and goes everywhere except where you want it. If you could select I.E. Low, Med, High, or just Low, and Hi. to eliminate the "blow-back" the system would be perfect.

If you are looking at this review, then you are doing an important thing for your house. Here in the Valley of the Sun, attic insulation is part of every FLIPz house and a major part of the "building envelope." R-38 insulation (about 14" of this product) is one of the best ways to keep as much of the cool A/C air where it belongs, while providing a healthy, breathable space below. Talk to your local Home Depot Tool Rental folks to schedule a blower. Using this without a blower is possible, but incredibly difficult. You will also want glasses, masks and headlamps. One last thing, try to get it done in the springtime. Attic temps around here get to well into the 160's in the summer!

In Georgia with lows of 15 to 20 my indoor temperature has not fallen below 64 degrees with no heat. The machine is easy to operate and it requires two people. The only problems I had was with the auto cutter which is supposed to cut the bag open, it did not work quite as advertised. Second if you use both hoses make sure you bind them together either with tape or rope. I covered 3300 ranch attic and used 49 bags. I purchased 60 bags initially. I already had markers in attic that were 8 to 10 inches. My readings after atticcat were over the 20 inch Mark, I actually cannot see the markers any longer. It took 6 hours with breaks in between. Would recommend mask and eye protection, even though the insulation is not itchy. Great Diy project and you can feel the results. Good luck.

Machine can be turned on or off at either end. You get 24 hours to return machine. If you are one minute over you are charged extra. You should study a couple of u-tubes vides for a directions. One con is that all of your landmarks get covered up. You may want to place little flags for landmarks like junction boxes.I did two houses with around R60 protection. Really you can put insulation as tall as you wish, I thin 20 inch is ideal yielding R60. I rate it 5 star !!!
