can I use this on the ceiling of my garage ?? To warm up the bedrooms above the garage.

Asked by: Pj
Dear PJ: Yes, Foamular XPS foam board is a good solution for your garage ceiling. Here are a few tips: (1) Depending on how cold it is where you live, the best approach would be to start by fastening 2" thick pieces of Foamular to the subfloor, between the joists. Seal all of the edges and joints carefully to block air leaks, with the 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff foam -- which remains flexible as things expand, contract and shift. (2) Then apply 1" sheets of Foamular over the bottom of the floor joists, to completely cover the wood (which is a good conductor of heat / cold). Again, seal all of the joints and edges carefully to block air leaks, with a generous layer of DAP 230. (3) If you need to save money, just apply 2" thick sheets of Foamular to the bottom of your floor joists, and seal the edges and joints carefully to block air leaks, with a generous layer of DAP 230. (4) As the Owens Corning rep noted, foam board is flammable and MUST be covered by a thermal barrier in your garage. Simply install 1/2" drywall over the foam board. We recently completed a deep remodel in Massachusetts and used Foamular to upgrade the insulation inside and outside. A couple of photos are attached. I hope this is helpful. Mark

If used horizontally under plywood as a floor insulator, does this need to be secured with nails/screws or not?

Asked by: James55
Dear James: No, you do not need to fasten Foamular foam board to your concrete pad or subfloor. A few tips: (1) Sealing air leaks is almost as important a R value. Be sure to install the foam board so that the panels fit snugly against the walls and each other. Seal all of the seams and joints carefully with Great Stuff 'Windows and Doors' or DAP 230 -- which remain flexible after they cure, to prevent cracks as things expand and contract. (2) If this is a basement installation and there is any hint of a water problem, install DriCore panels first -- followed by foam board and plywood. DriCore has a rubber layer on the bottom and spaces for water to move toward a drain. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expensive but efficient I used this to muffle the sound of an inline fan on a false wall and it worked great. it's very easy to work with which is why i pay for it but on the expensive side for insulation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use - works like a charm I recently used this to insulate the interior of my basement. It went up easily. In fact, it went up so quickly that insulating the basement was the most satisfying part of the entire basement finishing project. When needed I trimmed with a utility knife before using adhesive to stick these to the cinder block walls. I did not think of my basement as cold before this work, but I noticed a difference immediately - it is now the coziest room in the house. I would use this stuff again in a heartbeat. I spent a great deal of time reviewing the various insulation options before choosing foamular XPS. So glad I made this choice. The combination of ease of use, effective insulation, and ability to use below grade made this exactly what I needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Misinfomation I needed to fill in a misplaced window. I used this product to insulate the outside. Since the outside of the project was inside my garage I asked the employee that was helping me if this product was paintable. I was told it was and used a waterproof primer/paint spray. It was melting the board. It wasn't major but I would recomend some sort of over boarding or paneling if you want to paint for weatherproofing. In all I liked the product's ease of instillation, and was impressed at the insulationing effect for my kitchen.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dood Stuff Does the job. I installed it on the underground walls of the basement. This winter my laser temperature gun showed room temperature on the foam and 5 to 10 degrees lower on adjacent uninsulated wall. I used 2 inch foam board on above ground walls with similar results.
