Ive been given conflicting opinions on if I should staple the insulation flanges to the sides of the stud or the face. Which way is recommended?

Asked by: Jman
The tab should be stapled tightly to the inside of the studs. This in theory gives you a 1" dead air space between exterior walls and heated area.

Owens Corning R-13 EcoTouch PINK Kraft Faced Insulation Fiberglass Insulation Batt 15 in. x 93 in. is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 1162.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from The good news is that this stuff does not leave... The good news is that this stuff does not leave one with skin full of itchy fiberglass. I'm not sure I would want to lay down in it (with no clothes on) but it is not bad to handle as it was (a lot of) years ago. The bad news is that the kraft facing is wrinkled (worse on some rolls than others) which makes it a chore to get a good smooth surface for the drywall to go on. I also wonder how the length is measured. Is it measured by the length of the craft paper used or wrinkles don't count. I suspect the former as I seem to have a bit less than expected left over.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Effective! I just finished insulating the walls of an 800 sq-ft building. In the middle of Texas summer with highs over 100 deg, this building was nearly unbearable to be in during the middle of the day prior to the insulation going in. After I finished insulating the building's walls, the inside temperature dropped nearly 30 degrees and was generally comfortable to be in. A few tips: Use a hammer tacker stapler when hanging this insulation. Start with one of the top corners and hold it in place. Tack the corner on the stud with a few strikes. Tack the opposite corner next and make sure the facing is well stretched between 16 in on center 2x4 wall studs. Go down the wall tacking each side about every 8 inches. Cut out for wall sockets and simple fold back the insulation. At the bottom, cut across with a good pair of scissors or a box knife. Use a 2x4 to hold down long sections to cut lengthwise with a box knife. Save your scraps because they will come in handy for filling in oddly spaced studs or around other wall features such as electrical boxes, plumbing, etc. Make sure to fill in every gap you can. Anything you can't fill with this insulation, fill it with spray foam insulation to ensure that you have no air leaks from the outside. This will really help to increase the overall energy efficiency of your space.

The Tornado Shelter in my basement leaks sand and allows ants to get in the basement . I bought a roll and cut it first in 5" pieces which I cut in half, rolled up and stuffed in the small area of corrugated ceiling. Too early to tell if its going to work, but I live in an area where there is a lot of Sand in the soil. I might send a photo when I fisinh the project.

Rolls were thinner than usual and Kraft paper was very thin and light brown. It almost looked like these rolls got wet or were in very high humidity. Also the paper tape that holds the rolls together was on the edge instead of the middle. This made it hard to peel back the side paper for the first couple feet. Very poor quality control!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy installation. The pre measured pieces were also spot... Very easy installation. The pre measured pieces were also spot on in terms of width/height for standard 2 x 4 framing. The backing cuts easily with a razor knife so long as you use a fresh edge every 10-15 pieces. After that, the backing starts to tear when you are trying to cut.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roll was easy to use. If you cut the wrapper... Roll was easy to use. If you cut the wrapper carefully along the roll, up each side and then across the roll you can re-use the plastic cover it comes in to store any extra. Cuts easily with a sharp razor and paper is thick enough to stand up to installation abuse.
