Insulation is the construction material that, if done right, the homeowner never sees it and yet it is the most cost-effective way to improve energy efficiency. Even though you never see it, imagine how miserable you would be without it. Your HVAC would never be able to "keep up". With that in mind, I was looking for a good insulation that had many attributes besides keeping cold air out in the winter and hot air out in the summer. I have allergies and insulation is one thing I am allergic to. After some research, I found that this Owens Corning Pure Safety Insulation is the first insulation to win the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's certification. That was huge for me. I spent a lot of time going through our house, looking for anything that caused a reaction. All of things I did improved the air quality in our house, but I think this new insulation had the greatest impact. Because you don't see it you don't think about it, but I breath easier just knowing that it is designed to be good for the indoor atmosphere. Also, this insulation has very low dust and is mold, mildew and fire resistant. I got the unfaced batt, friction fit without the Kraft paper attached, which makes the installation much faster. You just push it in between the studs and that's it...no stapling. The R-15 rating is perfect because it is exactly the same width as a stud, so you won't have any compression leading to lower efficiency. One bag contains five batts of insulation. Each batt is 3 1/2" x 15" x 93" which fits exactly in the space between two studs on a typical 8' wall. One bag covers about 50 square feet in area.

This insulation is fantastic! I installed it in the wall of a remodel to cut down on noise and to insulate the ceiling and walls, and it works. It is easy to handle, easy to cut because it is so dense, and its structure (density) makes laying it down into the right spot easy. Laying a row parallel with the ceiling joists (2x4 construction) got me R15, and then laying a level perpendicular doubled it to R30. One more layer perpendicular to that got the R value to 45, great for AZ heat. Install is clean and tidy, just keep a fresh supply of razor knives for the first layer, since you’ll be going around recessed lights and vent boxes. It would have helped to use the long razor knives that have snap off blades for my precise cuts. I didn’t have mine with me and didn’t care enough to grab a new one, so I just used a regular razor knife and did fine. After that first layer is down, it’s a breeze throwing this down. I didn’t find it to be itchy at all, but one of my crew got congested right away, just like she does with any insulation. I don’t think it helped that we were sanding mudded walls at the same time—sheet rock dust is rough, and she gets congested with it, too.

Our house was built in 1903, so it is not only very drafty but not very sound proof. When we received this insulation I was really excited to install it. The insulation is the perfect size and shape to fit in the oddly spaced ceiling of our old house. Also after installing the insulation we can't hear anything that his happening in other rooms or on the second floor of the house. This is the perfect way to provide some piece and quiet (and heat savings) to your existing home!

When I saw this new insulation from Owens Corning listed on the Seeds reviewer campaign in December, I immediately requested it since my 1920's era home is drafty like a screen door thanks to absolutely no insulation being installed during its construction. I was fortunate with this request as Owens Corning actually offered either 4 or 8 bags of unfaced batt insulation with the one request. This has allowed me to not only finish the insulation of the rafters in my entire basement as you can see from my attached photos, but I brought up the remaining 4 bags of insulation to my attic so that I can replace the small quanitities of insulation on 3 walls that I suspect has black mold growing on it. When I was installing this insulation I first checked to see how my skin would react to rubbing my arm directly on the insulation and giving it about 30 minutes to react. Surprisingly, I never developed any itchiness from the test so I got to work putting up the batts in the rafters, trimming out sections from the batts to accommodate cross members between rafters, conduit, electrical, water and gas piping and wiring as well as central air ducting. When the project in the basement was finally completed, I have to say that I had wished that I had done the entire basement in this insulation instead of the other insulation I had gotten for free which has a much darker appearance. The basement is dark enough with one defective light fixture, so with this insulation being almost pure white in color it reflects back a lot of the light from the 3 remaining daylight LED bulbs. This insulation has also provided the benefit of a noticeable drop in the sound levels of transmitted noise from the entry door into the livingroom, which means my wife and I are far less likely to disturb our dogs when they are crated in the basement. The only odd thing about this insulation, not that it is a bad thing, is that over the past month it was stored in the basement, it emitted a cinnamon type odor (made the basement have a pretty noticeable cereal smell). This has dissipated though since I brought the excess insulation up to the attic, so it doesn't concern me.
