1.Can this be split depth wise in half go around wires, if so how hard is it to do so, in others words does it need to be sliced or just pulled apart? 2. Can it be doubled up for R30? ( in a floor over an unheated garage) 3. Can it be split to add the R15 + another split batt (for about an R 7.5) to get to a R22 for a 2x6 wall? I Hope Owens Corning themselves can answer these questions
Asked by: MikeTheReviewer
1. Easy enough. Cutting is cleaner, but can be pulled apart. 2. Yes, but not if it then gets compressed to fit in. Compression diminishes R value. 3. Yes, but again, not if it then needs compressed or squeezed in.

R-15 Pure Safety Unfaced Insulation Batt 15 in. x 93 in. is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 26.

The builder, as I expected, used standard fiber glass batts on exterior walls and the ceiling/attic barrier. One might ask what's wrong with fiber glass? And why exactly is this product so good? Here are my answers: 1) REAL FIRE PROOF MATERIAL: Roxul and this product are the only ones that have 0, everything else is above 0. 2) SOUND PROOF: I noticed a distinct difference in sound transmission between rooms (interior) when I added this product. 3) NO ITCHINESS: I don't wear gloves when working with this. I do wear a mask, but only out of caution not out of a requirement in my mind. I never walk away feeling itchy from installing the product. It feels like a blanket, and if I didn't buy it as insulation and someone handed it to me I might have a hard time determining what it was used for. This stuff is absolutely amazing compared to fiberglass' abrasive feeling. Furthermore, even the other major mineral wool product out there has an itchiness to it. 4) NO CHEMICAL SMELL: Roxul made me dizzy and sick, and I actually had to remove it (it was the first product I tried before using this one as an alternative to fiber glass). This product literally just smelled like a blanket to me. 5) CUTTING and SHAPING: Easier than Roxul by a long shot. Use a serrated knife, not a sharpy. It cuts EASY with the serrated knife, and doesn't crumble when being moved through complex areas in the cavity like Roxul does. It is awesome stuff. Possible Down Sides: No R-38 unfaced (ideally to fit in 2x10 16OC frictionless cavity) No R-23 or R-25 for 2x6 unfaced as well Recommend making those sizes unfaced because anyone using this stuff is not likely to use kraft as a vapor barrier IMO; they would use smart vapor barriers like that have selective humidity level triggered bidirectional capabilities. To Home Depot: Stock is a problem at Salem, NH. Can you address?

I took other reviews that say this product isn’t itchy into consideration when buying. Don’t be fooled, it is. It’s fiberglass, folks... wear a mask and take precautions when installing. I would recommend that you put your clothes directly into the washing machine afterwards too. It is easy to install and stays in place. We cut it with a serrated bread knife like other reviewers did and that was helpful. We’ll see about sound reduction, it is pretty dense so I expect it to help.

Two problems that I have already run into. 1) no information for contractors or inspectors. Inspectors have seen Roxul ,or rock wool as we call it, for decades, itis a readily accepted fire block and insulation. On my last inspection the inspector took the info off the wrapper to investigate the product. Fortunately he passed the work. 2) it's the toughest insulation to cut that I have ever run into On a positive the stuff is really dense and is an excellent sound barrier.

Use one of those crazy-sharp ceramic kitchen knives. Also, start the cut on the soft side (once you see the stuff you’ll understand) so the final cut is through the hard side. Otherwise you’ll get a ragged cut through the soft side when you cut through. 2 to 4 passes usually do it.

I was able to cut to size with a serrated bread knife. There is no itch when handling, even without gloves. No lung irritation or cough. Fits between two by fours with pressure, so no need to staple. Excellent product. I highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound dampening insulation Our house was built in 1903, so it is not only very drafty but not very sound proof. When we received this insulation I was really excited to install it. The insulation is the perfect size and shape to fit in the oddly spaced ceiling of our old house. Also after installing the insulation we can't hear anything that his happening in other rooms or on the second floor of the house. This is the perfect way to provide some piece and quiet (and heat savings) to your existing home!
