    Answer This Question

A:  Hello Patt, general rule of thumb is for the facing to face the winter warm side. However, this is dictated by code. We suggest checking with your local code official to verify what is needed in your area. Thank you for your inquiry!

Q:The govt website says for central Maine we need R60 insulation for an attic. Can I use multiple layers of R19 or do I have to actually buy R61? This is for an attic.

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello Jman, you can layer the R-19 to get to your desired R-value. However, when adding additional layers you want to use unfaced insulation, as sandwiching facing between layers of insulation can trap moisture. Thank you for your inquiry!

Q:I am looking to put up insulation in ceiling rafter for winter and finish interior work in spring. What are my options if I can?t put up sheet rock right away?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hello Ponts101, Per Building Codes Kraft facing should not be left exposed for extended periods of time. The other issue with installing is that Kraft is not an air barrier. This means that warm moist air will be able to contact the now colder roof deck and have increased potential for condensation. Thank you for your inquiry!

          Quality control is terrible
I stopped installing this product so I could express how poorly it is produced. The paper facings are often stuck together in parts and tear when you try to separate them. The stapling flanges are randomly stuck together and rip when trying to peel them for attachment. They also spray glue on the outside of the paper so that when it gets rolled up half the insulation sticks to the wrong side of the paper and pulls the insulation off as it unrolls. Poor quality control is apparent. Wasted time/$$

Easy-peazy! We were surprised at how quickly we got the batts up into our ceiling... no fuss, no mess. I found a mop handle with a T-bar that assisted with placement. Even at 75yrs old, we got it done in one day! Amazing!
            Easiest job I ever did!

            Horrible sweet smell
There needs to be some sort of quality control. Because the product wasn’t cured long enough now I have to endure a burnt sweet odor for several weeks? I’m sorry but that’s not ok. Our home is an older mobile, not air tight at all and we can’t get away from the smell in any room. Very very dissatisfied!

            Dear Emily,
I am so sorry to hear about your experience. During the manufacturing process the insulation is cured in an oven. In some cases, the binder is not completely cured and may cause a burnt sugar odor. This odor should dissipate over time. That time can vary depending on the weather conditions. In many cases once the interior finish is installed you will no longer smell the insulation.

            Thank you!
            Owens Corning

I had to cut it to fit since my ceiling joists were 19" on center. Still it was rather easy to install. Once I was finished I could really tell a difference in how the heat stayed in and how easy it was to cool. Great product.

              Works great
Re-doing a upstairs bedroom and there was blown in insulation with fiberglass insulation. I removed the ceiling and then the blown in insulation. Replaced it with fiberglass. Much neater looking and a lot less mess. Could tell a difference right away.
