Answer

Hello PM, Compressing the R-20 into a 2x4 cavity is going to reduce the R-value of the insulation to a R-14. Below is a link to our Compressed R-value bulletin. https://dcpd6wotaa0mb.cloudfront.net/mdms/dms/Residential%20Insulation/10017857/10017857-Building-Insul-Compressed-R-Value-Chart-Tech-Bulletin.pdf?v=1428909128000 Owens Corning does manufacture a R-15 that will fit within a 2x4 with not compression. Thank you for your inquiry!

How is this rated for sound proofing

Asked by Kevin November 30, 2020
1
Answer

Hello Kevin, Owens Corning EcoTouch Insulation is effective for acoustical control. However, insulation itself does not have a sound proofing rating. The overall acoustical control would be based on all components in the assembly. If you call 1-800-Get-Pink (438-7465) and provide your entire assembly we can provide a STC rating for your assembly. Thank you for your inquiry!

The question is what do you wish to accomplish. R-19 to me is in the middle, also what are the suds in the attic, 2 X 6, 2 X 8 I have found the R-19 sufficient for over garage, but I would suggest something thicker otherwise

Yes they sell a special type of insulated/insulation tape. You can go with that solution. Duct Tape may work, but I wouldn't trust it long term. Ultimately it depends on where the insulation is going. For me it was underneath our edition/family room flooring. Previous owner had a rinky dink door made of ply wood and an old timey latch w/no lock or latch. So all the little creatures of the woods nestled in the existing insulation and built homes for themselves & their young ones to survive winter. Oh and poop all up in that insulation making it not only gross, a health hazard, but ineffective. Floor was so cold to the touch that 1st winter I got on this the 1st chance I had come Spring. Ultimately overbought and had 1.5 rolls extra left over. I'm getting off topic though. For me I used a vapor barrier provided on one side of rolled insulation. Then staples between joists insulated silver material to trap heat. Its mostly done in attics, but I used it here making sure I left openings every few feet for each row to ensure it didn't get too hot and start fire. Got to let it breath in my case. In these areas I used some of the tape described. Just go back to HD or local hardware store ask an associate in the area. They'll get you pointed in right direction. Or if your lucky you'll get one who actually takes job seriously and will walk you through all available options and how to do it. These folks are rare at HD. As majority of employees are retirees, or lazy bums. Who can't be bothered b/c it's time for there 1oth coffee break w/buddies from plumbing, electrical, and lighting. Or they group has a lunch date, and hey gotta skid daddle on over to the new Chiles for jalapeno burger and draft beer specials for Wednesday! (I kid you not!) But its easy enough to find, and figure out. Insulation paid huge dividends for me next winter on heating bill. Good luck!

Horrible sweet smell
There needs to be some sort of quality control. Because the product wasn’t cured long enough now I have to endure a burnt sweet odor for several weeks? I’m sorry but that’s not ok. Our home is an older mobile, not air tight at all and we can’t get away from the smell in any room. Very very dissatisfied!

Response from OwensCorningSep 21, 2020
Dear Emily,
I am so sorry to hear about your experience. During the manufacturing process the insulation is cured in an oven. In some cases, the binder is not completely cured and may cause a burnt sugar odor. This odor should dissipate over time. That time can vary depending on the weather conditions. In many cases once the interior finish is installed you will no longer smell the insulation.

Thank you!

I had to cut it to fit since my ceiling joists were 19" on center. Still it was rather easy to install. Once I was finished I could really tell a difference in how the heat stayed in and how easy it was to cool. Great product.

Works great
Re-doing a upstairs bedroom and there was blown in insulation with fiberglass insulation. I removed the ceiling and then the blown in insulation. Replaced it with fiberglass. Much neater looking and a lot less mess. Could tell a difference right away.
