Questions & Answers

My husband wants to use this in the walls of our cabin.... Would you recommend it for this use?

Asked by: CuriousWife
I would say no. Insulation is not supposed to be compressed. It gets it's R Value (resistance value) by having small stores of air space between the fiberglass strips. When they are compressed too tight, they actually lose their insulative value. I would recommend using the thicker R value for your framing of your wall. So a 2x4 wall can use R 13, or R15. So you may want to use the R 15 if it's a 2x4 wall. The further you go to the north in this country the more likely you may find you have 2x6 walls. If you have a 2x6 wall you can use R 19 or R 21. So you may opt for the R 21 in that case. I just wouldn't over stuff the R 30 in there. I learned this on the job years ago working for a high end carpentry business. Good luck with your project.

It fits easily in 6 inch floor joist. Not sure if that helps. It might be a bit tight in a 4 inch Gap but you could probably make it work but I wouldn't suggest it

How many bags to cover 900 SQ ft?

How many bags to cover 900 SQ ft?
Asked by: Needzmo
This depends a bit on the layout of the space you are insulating. Remember this is faced so it's not an attic blanket that you just roll out over rafters. This is for going between rafters with the facing toward the living space and the kraft facing nailed to the rafters. But the short answer is you can see in the specifications that there are 11 pieces per bag and each piece is 2' x 4' so that means you have 88 sq ft of coverage per bag. That means you need 11 bags. The longer answer is measure how many rafter bays you have and how long they are and their spacing. I used this for 12" spaced rafters and just cut them in half lengthwise and got twice the coverage per bag. Do a little field measuring before you order and check the math and you should be good.

A bedroom and part of our kitchen are above our attached garage where the joists are exposed and we want to add insulation so it's less cold in the rooms. Am I right in reading that the faced paper should be inside the joists pointing up towards the room? If so, does this mean we need to cover up the fiber glass facing the garage? We weren't planning on adding dry wall and thought this would be an easy job where we stick batts in with face facing garage. And should we just unfaced insulation instead?
Asked by: Bob
The paper side is the moisture barrier and should be toward the living space. You can always put like 6 mill plastic over the fiberglass part when your done so it’s not dropping on you

I installed this in a She-Shed for my wife. It is so cozy out there and quiet. It is a 12x20 shed and I can heat the entire thing with a small ceramic heater. The batts were 48 inches and were easy to install. The entire roof was done by my son and I in an afternoon. The difference in heat lose was dramatic and instant. We started out wearing heavy coats and warm gloves and finished wearing just protection from the insulation and were still sweating. Something else to think about is that the bats are thick enough to hold the heat but thin enough that I still had 1 1/2 inches of room for venting above the insulation. Our county asks for 1 inch minimum of venting space. This will keep the roofing from molding. I am very happy with the product and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good quality insulation just slightly expensive Cheaper than price of some batts but still almost twice that of similar rolled insulation. Not sure why batts have to be expensive. It does fluff out very easily and nicely compared to the R30 rolled I picked up. Also fun to open up, slice a bag open and look out you've got a big pile of insulation on your hands. Kids would love watching that part of it, even adults slightly amused at how much volume is in one of these bags. Used these batts as first layer of an R60 combo. Second layer ownes R30 unfaced rolled. The insulation on the batts seams bit fluffier and better quality. They're a nice size too and easy to piece together and get up into an attic opening. Plan to do rest of the house with same stuff. Will need 7 more bags. These bags are pretty heavy and bulky so eat your wheaties before heading out to the store.

Physically, this insulation fits the bill... easy to install, fluffs up nicely, and insulates well. I installed it in the ceiling of a new workshop I am building within a steel outbuilding. With the walls built and sheathed, my little window air conditioner is now keeping a 12x12 room comfortable enough to work in to finish out in the Texas summer. SAYING THAT - The. Smell. There is a distinct sweet/burnt smell that some say smells like burnt cookies, burnt cotton candy, or burnt brownies. To me it smells like slightly burnt Cracker Jack. In any case, it is the eco-friendly glue that is now used, apparently it is plant-based. Owens-Corning has known about this for some time and blames it on variables in the manufacturing processes. I am hoping the smell diminishes once the insulation is covered by the sheetrock. It has been installed for two weeks and I have yet to notice any reduction in odor. Looks like I will be going with the competition for the walls.

There is no heat in the house, we started with a cold day, by the time when we we are done with the insulation on the walls and ceiling the house got much warmer without any heat running. We got the 24 inch insulation, so we ended up stapling the insulation as it was very heavy and kept falling down. So, please get a staple gun and staple it.

I used it in an attic and it made a difference immediately. It is very easy to install. The batts fit perfectly in between the rafters and the facing has edges that make it very easy to staple. The attic is a small area, 12'x16' and so the entire project was finished in about two hours. No extra clips or stripping was needed.

On about half my purchase the facing was glued offset making it unable to use the tabs getting proper coverage in stud bays without peeling off the facing and reattaching it. Very frustrating. Since I was unable to inspect for this before cutting it open I could not return the bad ones.
