Questions & Answers

Installing insulation on existing insulation.

I bought an old house that currently has R-11 fiberglass insulation between the 2x8 rafters. I want to install R30 roll out fiberglass over the existing insulation. Can I lay the new insulation over the old insulation? Does there need to be a layer of insulation that covers the rafters?
Asked by: WGABill
I have a different spin on this answer. The 2nd layer is supposed to be installed perpendicular to the first layer for complete coverage. That would have made my job harder crawling into tight spaces. My attic uses 2 x 6's and 16 inches on center. I bought 24 inch wide R30 batts and rolled it out the same direction as the old insulation. This method was easier for me and I didn't have any gaps. It really helped cut down on my heating bill.

Can you use this insulation over knob and tube wiring? If not, can I lay it around the K

Asked by: Marilyn
you should be able to lay it over the knob and tube wiring as long as the wiring insulation is in good condition. laying insulation over the wiring will make it more difficult for an electrician to upgrade your house wiring in the future.

Asked by: Rusty
I had a similar problem. There's an easy fix.I installed 2x4's on top of the ceiling joists.

R-30 EcoTouch PINK Unfaced Fiberglass Insulation Batt 24 in. x 48 in. (8-Bags) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 564.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the affordable price and perfect for layering up your insulation! Good stuff, used this in an attic to achieve R60. Used owens corning R30 Kraft batts for first layer and than rolled this out over top. Some people commented it doesn't fluff up as nicely as others and I agree. It's very compressed when purchased, but all it takes is a bit of fluffing. Just grab the top layer and give it a few shakes than grab in the middle and repeat. You can even flip it upside down if needed. I used ten rolls in a small attic area and only one roll took a bit more work than the others to fluff up. The R30 batts practically spring to their fluffiness on their own however so not sure why this stuff is a bit more reluctant. However, it's good stuff, an affordable price, and handy size. No itch and nice touch having the R value printed on the insulation in large visible font. When you're layering up install it running perpendicular to the first layer and be sure to butt the edges together snuggly. Seems to be made for layering without the paper backing, nice touch Owens Corning! Would've been a pain pulling paper off each roll. After installation, heater runs noticeably shorter durations to warm up the room. :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a difference!!! I have a 1950's ranch and there is barely any insulation in the entire attic. I have put in 11 rolls so far over our old attached garage that we turned into a master bedroom and bathroom. I laid the first rolls in the joists and the second set across the joists making a R60. We live near Chicago and last year our bathroom dropped into the low 50's and so far this year it has been around 15 degrees warmer. I still have 3/4 of the attic left to insulate but I can't wait to see how the rest of the house will feel once we are done. This insulation is great to work with. Easy to cut and work with. It has touched my skin a few times, when I was installing the baffles for the eve vents I was in a very tight spot and my face was on the insulation. I was afraid I would be itching all night long but to my surprise there was no itching. Love this stuff!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hard job made easier with this product My husband and I purchased this insulation on sale and chose this brand due to its eco friendly properties and R-30 rating. We installed 50 rolls in our attic over a couple of weekends. This product performs as advertised and reviewed: No vocs, itch free, can tear it with your hands if you left your matt knife 20 feet behind you on a board in the attic. Absolutely the best choice we could have made for our project. If you have a low ceiling attic this is the way to go.....easier to roll and push with broom handles to edges than hunch and crouch with the blow-in type insulation which is what I helped my brother do in his attic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the right size to carry by yourself, and the 25' length makes insulating large attic spaces ... Just the right size to carry by yourself, and the 25' length makes insulating large attic spaces extremely easy. If you haven't done insulation in a while the difference between "EcoTouch" and the old stuff is amazing. No itchy scratchy feeling afterwards, I used gloves and short sleeves.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Was a little taken back when I realized that it... Was a little taken back when I realized that it did not have a paper to staple it to rafters. But then I decided to lay it on top of my R19 papered insulation which I noted to conform nicely around the wires pipes etc. I do believe it’s going to be just what I wanted to have in the attic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dont hesitate easy project I researched all my options. I was hesitant to use blown in since most of my attic is inaccesible unless you're bellying crawling. I definately didnt want to get stuck surrounded by dust and not able to see my way out. The rolls expand quickly once you break the inner tape. We used 8' furring strips to shove the rolls into place. The hardest part was rolling them in the package from one end to the other. And I saved money by using a creative solution to not blocking the soffit vents. I recommend this to anyone. It was easy and quick. We put 20 rolls up in 4 hrs. Still need to buy more but have already noticed a big difference in how often the furnace runs and how much the temperature has evened out across the house.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Thermal resistance is only about three quarter of what is listed I insulated my attic with 2 layers of Owens Corning fiberglass insulation; one is R19 at the bottom and one is "EcoTouch R30 Unfaced Continuous Roll Fiberglas Insulation" on top. The R19 layer expanded immediately to about 6" thick once the rolls were cut open. The R30 layer only expanded to about 6.5" to 7" thick. I did everything I could think of to make the R30 layer to expand the 9" thickness as listed but it was impossible. I do not have any way to measure the thermal resistance of the compressed insulation to say for sure about the actual R value of this item. It has been almost a year now and the R30 layer is still very much the same thickness. Anyway, I did put some short segments of the R30 in the vertical position against the wall. These segments seem to expand far greater than the ones that were laid horizontally, but the last time I checked, it was only about 8 inches thick. Owens Corning guarantees that its fiberglass insulation should maintain its thermal resistant forever. I will write them to complain about this.
