Questions & Answers

Can you use this insulation over knob and tube wiring? If not, can I lay it around the K

Asked by: Marilyn
Before you take anyone's words on this question please do your research with professionals. I had knob and tube wiring and ALL of my research indicated that you should not put insulation down on it. The hazard to fire is tremendous and your insurance company might not pay out if they discover you put insulation down on KT.

can the faceless insulation be used in walls? If not, why not?
Asked by: JD
Hi JD, yes unfaced insulation may be used in walls. However, on exterior walls we do recommend a facing. If you have further questions please contact an Owens Corning representative at 1-800-GET-PINK for assistance with your application. Thank you for your inquiry!

I'm planning to insulate an attic with R-30, possibly double layered, and need to know the dimension (diameter) of the unopened R-30 25 ft. rolls to see if they will fit thru a 24" x 24" attic access opening. As far as that goes, are there any of the standard insulation packages that would not fit thru a 24" x 24" opening? Thanks.

After picking up the rolls and getting them up into the attic after a few days is when I started to open up the rolls and laying them out in four of the rolls after starting to roll them out it looked like they had been basically pulled apart or stretched to their limits to the point that there was not much of it left to lay down so I ended up cutting it at that point and tossing it out until I was back to a full thickness piece to say take a piece of toffee candy and pull on it that's the best description that I can come up with maybe your insulating machine got UPSET at a worker!!LOL I have used your product back in CT. and the only problem then was on the faced paper on the pieces was dyed a black color I contacted your company back then and they said it would not be harmful or take away from the quality so I put them up and no problem this on the other hand was a pain in the BOTTOM!! HMMM" see thru insulation" , something new ? Figure it out folks and get back to me THANKS!!

For my attic project I ordered quite a bit of items: plywood sheathing, dimensional lumber and 20 of the 15" R-30 rolls (to obtain bulk pricing per roll) and 6 of the 25" R-30 rolls to insulate the rest of my attic space. Since I have a trailer I ordered online and picked-up in store. The 20 rolls came in (3) 6-packs that are sealed and each pair inside zip-tied then 2 individual rolls. In one of the 6-packs there were only 5 rolls. I didn't notice at the store since they were stacked on a pallet, bundled tight with the zip tie and the packaging makes it difficult to see the contents. I thought I had looked it over good enough but evidently I did not. My suggestion would be to make absolutely sure all 6 rolls are in each bundle before you leave the store/accept delivery. The insulation worked out good however and was easy to handle and cut to length. I would buy these again but I would make it a point to account for each roll.

It came on pallets and was shrink wrapped for easy handling. I was not happy with the home shipping as it was not clear to me that they would not deliver past the street. Having to cut open the bundles and move everything from the street was a hassle.

Installation wasn't necessarily fun but it wasn't super difficult, at least not due to the product itself anyway. It does what it is supposed to do and does it well.

It had the original builders "blown-in" insulation that had settled to ~ 3" along w/some bare areas. The summer was extremely hot on the 2nd floor and the AC ran almost continuous. This fall (Nov & Dec 2017) I installed 48 rolls of R30 in the attic to achieve a rating of R30 near the eaves and R60 in the center of the attic. In addition, I installed a foil Radiant Barrier on the attic's ceiling joists. This was recommended to reflect the infrared heat during the summer. Currently ( Dec. 15, 2017) it is 23 degrees outside, the 1st floor is a comfortable 72 degrees; the heating vents are closed on the 2nd floor and it is 70 degrees. I've noticed the gas furnace is cycling less often than it normally would. I am very pleased with the results and look forward to a more comfortable summer.
